Oil Change Light

I have a 2022 F350 diesel with just over 10,000 miles on it. The last oil change was performed at Ford at around 7000 miles and the sticker says I should be good until about 12,000 miles. The "Change Oil Soon" light comes on when I crank the engine. I've had the truck just over a year. Do you think that the light coming on is a timing thing, or do I really need to change the oil after a few thousand miles? I haven't towed with it since.I had the oil changed and driving has been a mix of interstate and city.

I'm leaning towards it not being needed, but thought I"d ask if anyone has seen anything similar and if they think I should change the oil again this soon.

You're going to get a bunch of opinions on this.... just read any of the other threads! LOL.

My opinion, don't mind the OLM. Read your manual. Pick the oil that your truck needs based on your usage from the suggestions in the manual. Then pick an interval. You can base it on either mileage or engine hours. Regardless, I would suggest changing it yearly even if you don't meet the mileage or engine hour intervals.

And for me, I use Rotella T6 5W40 and change the oil and filter every 5k miles. I also send samples from each change to Blackstone for analysis.

Thanks. I came here and hadn't read any of the other threads....got to about page 7 and there is already an active one on this topic. I think I'll wait, and maybe just have an oil analysis done next time. I've never had one done before.

Thanks,

These other guys have nailed it, the tech who changed the oil didn't reset the monitor.
When you change it before the monitor message pops, resetting the monitor has to be done with the factory scan tool, you can't do it from the dash.
It will pop at right around 10k miles, which is exactly what you are describing.
So, if you leave it alone, the change oil now message will be popping up every time you start it.
You could reset it now, but then it won't come on when it actually is due for a change, or you could go ahead and change it now, reset the monitor and get back onto the proper cycle.

What engine, when it was changed at 7k, was that because the light was on, when(time since) was that last oil change completed?

When changing the oil prior to the message popping up, like so many do, reseting the monitor from the dash is all that needs to be done. No factory scan tool needed.

Whenever the message pops up on my dash, I just reset it right then and go on about my business like it was never even there. I change by mileage.

I reset the OLM in mine when I change the oil every 5k miles and the message has never popped up on my truck. Just go to the oil life screen and hold "ok" to reset it, even if it reads 99%. No scan tool necessary.

If that is the case then you are definitely NOT following Blackstone's advice. Most often Blackstone will advise you to INCREASE your oil change intervals, often times over the 10K intervals recommended in the manual. You definitely like to waste your hard earned dollars.

Thanks for your concern, but you are wrong. In order to get an "ESTIMATE" as to how much farther I could have ran the previous oil that was in the truck, you have to get a TBN, which is not part of a routine oil analysis. It costs extra and is not something I add each time. I have only gotten it once, and that was just to see what it said. Blackstone estimated that I could "try to go about 7000 miles" based on that one TBN analysis.

Please take note that 7000 miles is not even close to 10000 miles. There is actually a 3k mile difference between the 2...

But yes, you are correct, based on that one past sample, I could have increased that one interval between my oil changes, but no, I am not going to change my 5k mile intervals. I do a lot of city driving, and almost always fill up with B20. I do keep idle time low and monitor my DPF% and fully complete the regens when it hit 95 - 100%. But based on my driving conditions, oil chages at 5k miles is my safety net. Yeah, I could probably go a little over my normal mileage, but according to my analysis, I couldn't touch 10k miles. There is a saying that I have seen many times here that is awfully true...

Oil is cheap, motors are expensive.
I see no reason to try and push a $90 oil change farther than it should go at the expense of a motor. Go check out the 6.7 short and long block back order threads... that is definitely a line you don't want to be in! Talk about "wasting hard earned dollars!"

Saying that, sure, I know that some folks that have different driving conditions, and some of those folks can get closer to 10k on an oil change safer than I can, and that is why I suggested to the OP that he should check the manual and base his intervals on his own usage.

The first oil change was actually around 6700 miles. I can give you the exact mileage if you like. It's a 6.7 diesel, and the oil life left was zero. I had just completed a 2500 mile round trip drive to Key West and back give or take, and towed my 10000 lbs boat probably 2000 of those miles. When i got back, the oil change light was not on, but came on a couple of months later and I had it changed. Probably around Sept of 2022.

I'll probably just go ahead and change it. I want to switch to full synthetic anyway.

Thanks for the replies..
