Time for new engine?
2006 f150 4x4 5.4 just hit 250,000 miles. About a month ago after a short trip to town and back, had that horrible diesel sounding rattle. Waited half hour and restarted, went away. Oil was good and clean. And didn't happen again during daily drives. 2 weeks later, drive over 50 miles and it starts rattling, dying at stops and threw a engine light. Have to get codes pulled tomorrow, but from what I've read from here it either exhaust leak, timing, phasers or oil pump.
I love this truck and don't want car payments. I can afford a new engine if needed.
So what's yalls advise? Is it worth putting in a new 5.4 when that engine has all the problems from thier original design, or is there a better crossover?
250,000 miles and still running doesn't read like junk to me.
You can get codes pulled for free at most auto parts places, but a code reader ain't expensive.
History of truck would be good too . Mean while drop your oil pan and look for parts and inspect , clean out oil pickup it may be clogged . Open up those valve covers check out those rollers /cams . There is a lot to look at .
Rollers are a frequent fail on these engines ,you may catch it before bad damage . You can also see the health of the phasors at that time . You can do a lot from the top .
You can do an crank end play check also , usually excess end play will require a reman .
Remans are a lot of work it is not without trouble , a lot of stuff moves over. The fluids/ gaskets etc are not cheap , You will despise the mounting bolts for the power steering . Exhaust studs can be a real challenge .
I'm not saying throw a lot of money on the engine rebuild , just learn and try to get it to go until it can't . There will be a lot of help on here .
