I agree that the MFG. has spent zillions on testing, so why mess it up on your DD. Without spending the big bucks on the 5.4, best increase in HP is to help it breath (in and out). Why not open up the front end of the OEM air box and cover the box and intake with heat shielding like Lava rock. This method is quick, clean, and not considered modifying the OEM intake. Rule of thumb: inlet is > MAF is > Throttle body. I haven't measured My 01 Expedition yet, but it looks like taking the air silencer out, then a short piece to slip over the filter box connecting back thru the fender, basically replace the air silencer with something bigger (I use ABS plastic tubing). The hole in the fender looks to real close, but sometimes I do have to open it up to accommodate the larger tube dia of the ABS tube and there are no worries about suckin water on those rainy days and passes smog in CA... I've been very successful with this on several vehicles.

I was board last night, so I dug up some leftovers from the last project. I ran short on the LavaRock, but more is on the way.
I know it is not finished, but I wanted to share. Air Box w/LavaRock
Here is the air silencer I removed. Air silencer removed and a short piece of ABS pipe was installed in its place.
Quick Clean Functional and Passes smog in CA Mike/EZ
I couldn't help my self so I peeked into the TB, here is what I found.
5kmi ago I Sea Foamed the upper intake, What's wrong with these pic's? I'm not sure what is going on but something is..... With it being cleaned not to long ago there should not be all that gunk behind the butterfly an not Infront of it. Also, if it burned that much oil in such short amount of miles, I should see on the dipstick or am I the dipstick??
This is where you-all chime in, confirm with Im having issues (Gremlins) or I'm smokin crack :-).

What started out as a simple DIY CAI ended up being the proverbial can of worms. Of-course it was expected and needed. After some cleaning, smoothing, and a little polishing the Expedition is back together, for this elbow on the back of the intake manifold.
Napa found a set in the lower intake gskt set, but no such luck it was way to big. So in the mean time I needed to effect an emergency repair.
ow about a round of Name that part, Not the prettiest job but it doesn't leak so it should work till I find one. I have searched several different ways to no avail and manuals have not arrived as of yet so how about a round of name that part. PLZ PLZ
The wife and I took the Expedition for a shake down cruse today, marked improvement in drivability. I'm sure MPG's dropped cuz I couldn't keep my foot out of it. :-). At first start up and idle both seemed high but given a few lessons on how it should run (adaptive learning) everything settled down. to speciation.
The intake did look well done, so I'm sure it is in the cards to change it out in the near future. I feel for now at least i'm gona flag my hours on this job and grab another ticket.
How about some noise abatement maybe??? Mike/EZ
How did you do the seafoam, through the vacuum line at brakebooster? Follow that line back to it's vacuum source. If not mistaken, that line attaches to the engine side of the throttle body? So it would not clean that side of the butterfly
I used seafoam in the fuel for the injector and cylinders, and the spray into the TB just before the butterfly. it's a moot point now the top end is sparkly clean no leaks. I didn't check the milage on my shack down, but I was having so much fun I tuned out the world then ran out of gas :-(. I knew I would need fuel when I left town and just kept passing station after station. I missed it by that much LOL AAA to the rescue all is good. Yesterday was dent and scratch removal today I'm thinking new sounds, and a few pic's for show an tell.

We know cuz it is black and wet looking so it is burnt oil and oil usually comes from the pcv. In the expedition the pcv port is at the rear of the lower intake, and you would expect for the trace to start there. except when the TB slams shut then everything in the intake swirls around. also, when the engine is turned off the gasses will rise coating everything. My thoughts are leaning toward massive blow by would need to be present in order to coat the intake so heavily in a short time (3 months). with the butterfly coated on the back side only the pcv is the most likely injection point. I also found a white residue in the brake booster vacuum line. Maybe someone didn't like the PO and put something in it??? Unkown, so a compression test setting a base line is certainly warranted. I guess if or when I start seeing smoke out the pipe it will be motor time. Till then rod the **** out of it LOL Mike/EZ
