what’s the real back story?

have you checked for any blockages in the filler tube?

was the tank removed recently?

did you have someone shove something down the filler tube?

is the fuel going into the filler tube and running out on the ground?

is fuel going in and not registering on the guage?

It's the charcoal canister, common problem.

Get a new one, drop the spare, remove the old one, install the new one, replace the spare. Enjoy filling it with gas once again.
