Never personally heard of them having a problem like this even semi-regularly. Can't remember if I've heard of it happening at all, but it does not sound impossible.
Have you verified that the front and rear differential gearing is the same?
I would say you need to verify where the binding is happening. Can you shift the transfer case? Can you remove the driveshaft(s) to make sure it's not a problem with the rear end itself?
