Question for you all.
6.9 NA idi.
Are the glow plugs supposed to cycle on and off for a bit after the engine starts?
I found out I wasn’t getting 12 volts to all plugs because of the output wire female pin was broken at the connector.
Though the wait to start light would come on and then shut off before it was fixed(and started hard) now it cycles on and off after starting. And much easier in cold weather.
Just want to make sure that’s normal. 😁
My knowledge on how the 6.9 liter glow plug controller works is quite scant, though I believe there is a latching mechanism that will energize the glow plugs after startup to aid in cylinder heating and to control emissions when cold.
Very nice looking truck!
On the newer computer controlled 7.3 IDI glow-plug controller, the glow plugs will cycle on-and-off for about 20 seconds after the wait-to-start light has extinguished whether or not the engine is running or not. Not sure about the older 6.9 version.
I replaced the GP controller on my 6.9l and it stopped cycling the GPs. Then a few months later the GPs started cycling again. I would actually have to turn the key to the run position, wait, turn it off, and then turn it back to run a few times. I tested the GPs (Motorcrafts) and they were fine so I bypassed the GP controller with a push button switch to the GP relay. It starts effortlessly now.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m just curious how the system works since it’s not computer controlled. There must be a heat sensing snap switch or another analog device in the controller.
I’m just glad I found the broken wire and it starts easier now.
When my GPs were cycling they only did so for less than 30 seconds. As I recall, I tried to start the truck without turning the ignition OFF and back ON again. It never worked. That's why I would turn the ignition OFF and back ON once or twice.
I attribute it to the GP controller. It was probably drop forged Chinesium. I glanced at a schematic in the past and I think my Water In Fuel light and high speed idle switch are non-operational. I want to dig deeper into it but have never gotten around to it.
When they cycle or click, it is an after glow to help warm up the cylinders
to get the fuel to completely burn and help cut some of the smoke, and
get her to smooth out.
My 86 Controller didn`t work, so I have it set up manually.
We have been pretty cold here this winter, one morning -2, and low teens.
So I give her 10 sec glow, get her to start, and will give it a few 6 or 8 seconds
click on the Toggle for an after glow to get her to quit sounding like a rock crusher.
This morning is 11F, but I have the Block heater on, and she will just about not need
the Glow plugs.

Maybe I can help with the mysterious nature of the 6.9 idi glow plug set up. Also, I found these and refused to let them be thrown away. Yes behold I own a 1985 6.9 diesel PC/ED factory book!!!
