Does anyone know how to decode the serial numbers that are stamped on the engine block? I got a couple of free motors, both 7.3L, but was wondering if the serial numbers would denote what year/model they came out of, where they were built, and anything else like that. I suppose it doesn't really matter, I just think it would be cool to know. One of them has a brass plate, with additional numbers, riveted onto the engine. I'm guessing that's some kind of marking to indicate that it was rebuilt?
The numbers on the engine, that is currently in my truck, are 6.9D U2 U297749. Obviously, the 6.9 designates the engine size and the "D" stands for diesel. But I want to know if any more information can be derived from the remaining digits. From what I read on the internet last night, the "U2" designates that it was built for a Ford. If it was built for an International it would have been "M2". Can anyone confirm this? I'll include photos of all the serial numbers in a couple of minutes.
The 6.9L that lives in my truck. The 7.3L I plan on rebuilding and features a brass badge. The 7.3L parts motor. This one features an asterisk at the end of the serial number.
