I know it's been a day since this post however, I have a 292 Y pulled from a 62 F-100 and installed it in my 54. Do you recall which Pertronix Igniter you used. The best I can tell is that the 1281 ignitor or 91281 Ignitor II will fit the 292 Y. Thanks in advance, Phil

I used the 1281. Rumor has it the original pertronix does better than the ignitor 2. I also upgraded the coil to 12v to match. The original coil can be used but I eliminated the resistor altogether and I am happy how solid the spark is! Cold start on a foggy morning is no sweat!
I contacted Pertronix and the tech's pretty much echoed your thought's, so I dropped into the local Summit and grabbed the 1281 Ignitor and pertronix coil. Once I have it installed, I'll follow-up with photo's..
pertronix ignitor allows for wider plug gap for a better burn. i have installed over100 over the past 45 years.
i found a gap increase from 35 to 40-45 thousands and an increase of 4-5 degrees timing makes a world of difference in the way the engine runs. this was on everything from a 170 ford six to a 427 high rise ford with dual carbs.
also used it on 283 and 396 chevys, and a few dozen chrysler sixes and V8's
