Hello guys and girls, I have a 2019 Explorer Ltd and bought about a yr ago with 30,000 miles on it and when we bought it the heater core was leaking so they replaced it, it"s been a yr and I still smell it and believe I have another small leak although I check the antifreeze regularly and have never added a drop. I'm thinking of adding stop leak, Please advise and possibly a good name brand.
I would have it checked out. Possibly a leaking radiator cap, or could be the beginning of the water pump. I wouldn't start with the heater core, especially since it is new, unless you are getting coolant on the floor.
Stay away from the stop-leak, that brings on a whole different set of issues down the road. Is this covered under the powertrain warranty? Did they properly clean the area around the heater core to remove any previously leaked antifreeze residue, that may be getting hot and causing the odor?
Just saying so from experience, went through that issue with my wife's 2013 Land Rover (which was basically a Ford Escape). Dealership did a good job of replacement and cleaning out the area where the leak occurred. Hope you get the odor resolved, hot coolant smell is almost as bad as an exhaust leak for odor...
