Here's another handy tool I found on the 'net. Every time a friend asks me about their charging system not working when using or replacing a generator I have to pull it out and look at it because I can never remember the appropriate procedure. If done wrong you could ruin a perfectly good voltage regulator. I have been there and done it so I always look at the diagram first. You want to actually disconnect the wires and short them together as shown. That will isolate your voltage regulator in the event of a damage or shorted Field in the generator.
For our Fords, use the one on the right hand side. Type B:
A new voltage regulator is needed but not sure what is considered "quality" anymore. I got mine from Carpenter, but I'm sure it's chinese but it works for now.
As noted, that battery has long since passed it's date of death. Also as noted, THICK battery cables will help flow as much juice out of those 6V batteries even as they get a bit weaker over time (not dead, as in this case).
