i just bought a 2004 f150 supercrew.. where can i geat the dvd p[layer to fit in the oveerhead railing system.. audiovox rep says they are using a 6" between the rails but that seems lame
my employer makes the dvd for the truck rail system (we make the rail, overhead system and many other interior components in teh truck)
you can order the Ford DVD through ford accessories if you have already taken delivery of your truck.
in the ideal world, you would be able to order the dvd, and the wire harness would already be installed in the headliner, and the install would be literally 5 minutes. ( the whole concept of the rail system) but Ford has not issued the change to add a wire harness for trucks that are not pre-ordered with the dvd yet. we have been trying to push this through..... so the dvd is installed like any other aftermarket kit would be for now, dropping the headliner and routing the wire harness to the radio head.
we are working on aftermarket products for the future to add to the rail. see my post on "Rail overhead system" if you have interest in what is coming soon.
The DVD system currently offered by FORD is a 7 inch screen. Do you know of any larger? Also, I ordered my '04 SCREW last week and confirmed back with the dealer today re: the DVD player. He says it is still not available. I also asked him about having the factory run the harness for the system. He said he was not aware of this, but will check and try.

the availability date for the DVD has drifted back and fourth a little from mid nov to mid dec and maybe back. so you both could be right in the middle of this.
nutty, i hope yours comes with the DVD here in late november!!! that's great news, please keep us posted.
unfortunately, the latest info I have regarding the "pre wire" kit is that ford electrical does not want to add the part number until the 05 model year. that kills a ton of potential DVD sales for us and Ford. we are working with the Ford Vehicle Personalization engineering department to push the electrical group to make the change now. I will try to keep us posted of the latest here.
you can still buy the ford DVD through accessories to add to the rail, just more labor involved in running the feed to the radio head.
Thanks for the replies. My salesman just informed me that he can now order with the DVD system. I have decided to not do so in the hopes of an aftermarket system down the road that will have a little larger screen (say 9").
keep in mind that aftermarket products will only work through fm modulation for this radio. ford uses what is called a CAN buss for communication with the radio head. Basically, our DVD (Factory ordered) is the only product that can communicate with this CAN bus right now. I know this first hand because i am presently (today in fact) installing one of our DVD systems after the fact, since I ordered my truck before Ford made the DVD available, I don't have the Ford harness, and even our electrical guys said that if i don't do the full blown installation harness( with CAN buss lines), i won't be able to use the aux input . So i am doing an FM modulated method.
rambunctious,
Thanks for the information. Granted, the CAN Buss set-up sounds better, but I still would rather have a larger screen. We have the FM-modulated type in our van with no issues except the screen size.
RAMBUNCTIOUS.. IS THE CAN BUS ONLY AVAILABLE ON FACTORY ORDERED UNITS .. I BOUGHT MY TRUCK BEFORE THEY OFFERED THE DVD SYSTEM. CAN I GET THE SAME DVD THRU FORD PARTS? IF SO DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT COSTS? OR IS THERE AN AFTERMARKET DVD THAT USES THE RAILING SYSTEM
I am looking for an aftermarket DVD player with wireless headsets. In case I want to listen to the stereo while the kids are watching a movie. Any suggestions???
the can buss is only available for the factory DVD right now.
i did see some mockup dvd systems installed on the rail at the SEMa show but nothing that we sanctioned (we own the patents) and they were FM modulated
we are pushing for the wire kit release to allow after vehicle build installs of the DVD. I am checking with our program manager to find the lastest info on availability of DVD and Wire kit through accessories.
I am jumping around a few posts here and at other sites with this info so ping this thread if you don't here from me by christmas
