What's that braided hose coming out of the HPO rail and going to some sort of return line dropping down between the oil cooler and the block along the front of the engine?
The engine with ‘8% lower...’ is the result of PERDEL measurement and could be a bad injector or something bad. The disgusting condition of this engine is descriptive of how poorly it was cared for and combined with a sketchy seller would be a hard pass for me.
All the front accessories and literally everything else on your van engine will bolt up to ANY ‘96+ 7.3 PSD or 444 International engine. On that note, some of the best used engines I’ve bought were from school buses. They were all retired at just over 100k miles and had no budget constraints for maintenance. They are getting harder to find now though.....

that’s what I thought I was getting into with this bus. But I’ve learned talking to some of the guys back east, that y’all run these trucks until they won’t pass vehicle inspection. Arizona looks like we run them til they die or “too expensive” to fix and we throw them out….. unfortunate I know. No one saves stuff out here. It’s a shame
so if compression is good this should be a good replacement for me?

I don’t see what you’re talking about. Looks like the fuel lines are in the way of where the hpop hose attaches at hpop
Yep 96 looks like a dang good deal, and everything is just bolt up for swapping to van. You'll want to swap the front cover and oil pick up. Oil dip stick tube, exhaust manifolds, all the accessory brackets, well basically all of it but not hard at all if you're working from a stand. Harbor Freight has a 1 ton stand for a decent price that will hold the beast.

didn’t know about the oil pan and pickup. I was suspicious that the front covers were different though….
Im thinking Im going for it. Need to arrange shipping and talk to him again

Swapping front cover is not necessary. I’ve put plenty of early engines in later model trucks. Just use the correct HPO reservoir gasket for the front cover.
It is worth the $16 tube of TA31 and the cost of a new dipstick flange to pull the oil pan and hedge your bets you never have a leaky dipstick flange. If budget allows, go ahead and get a weld-in flange.
Ive had pro bedliner sprayed on a bunch of these pans. This way they NEVER rust out. Usually $25-30 after I clean and prep them.

You're correct the front cover isn't necessary but I suggested it because of the oil anti aeration valve the early engines had. From my research they end up being little more than a potential leak point and I figure better to nip something like that in the bud while it's convenient rather than have the possibility of it bitting you later. IIRC the ”valve” was phased out mid 96 sometime so there's a chance this donor engine doesn't have it.
Edit: Looks like the change was made between the 96 and 97 engines.

I’d be planning on it anyway. Looks like my PA motor might fall through. Someone else was in line before me and he does not seem like he wants to deal with me or shipping. Nor do a compression test. Says it runs perfect though…

Good to know, where did you find that? I didn’t have luck finding info about the difference between front cover or pickup tubes….
For anyone else wondering, I found a couple other ads last night in my state. 1-4 hours away depending on location. I’ll post some pictures of the motors and ads later today… some are full truck some are just motors…
Try "deaerator valve 7.3 powerstroke". Looks like I miss remembered the proper name. Heck looks like Riff Raff sells replacements now. Back when I was chasing my oil aeration problem it was like they never existed. Even the small handful of threads I found referencing it all claimed Ford never offered a replacement. The only option was a new front cover, hence my recommendation to ditch that cover. Of course if it ever does cause a problem it requires removing the front cover to access it so still a pain even with new parts available.
Hi everyone, check out what I found today.
2001 F350 214k. Has service records, willing to let me do a compression test and inspection. Asking $2500 for engine and all incl. accessories….
truck was in a front end crash, so worried about broken stuff like the front cover… not sure what else would break in an accident like that.
looked like a nice clean Arizona truck before it was wrecked…. Let me know what y’all think.
