Not much over 20k miles on the truck so I decided to hit the front u-joint zerk fittings with some grease. Probably should have done it sooner because it took about 10 pumps on each side before any grease started pushing out. Hardly any OEM grease came out with the new red that I was putting in. Makes me wonder why, other than cost, they would short change these grease-able fittings like this.
It does not take as much grease as you would first think to keep it properly lubed. And in some applications to much could cause overheating. Also I would be very surprised to find out ford even touched these parts at all. I would think
they are all assembled by another company and just installed on a truck.
That being said these ujoints along with other scenarios I do grease mine till the grease comes out just to keep the water out.
I was taught to grease until you saw "boot pooch" but stop before you saw grease.
I hit mine every oil change, currently using Delo grease. No drip from the gun over time like Mobil. https://buy.chevronlubricants.com/Pr...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

I'm using Motorcraft XG-11 and it sure does leak from the gun when not in use... I've learned to keep it in a large plastic bag when stored. And I typically just give it a few pumps every 5k miles. I see the old grease coming out, but I don't wait until I see fresh new grease. I do need to be a little better about cleaning up the old grease that comes out though...
Every 5K I grease the u-joints when I rotate the tires. It takes more than a couple pumps to get grease to come out. I always wipe off the excess grease. I don't want to leave grease on the road. let alone flinging it all over the underside of the truck.

Chad is onto something about grease exiting the seals. I'm probably not pumping enough in.
Found this video about Spicer U-Joints and lubing.
That was a very interesting and informative video. I usually grease the U-joints every other oil change but never really made sure that grease came out of all 4 bearings before. On a tangent the U-joints are another reason I change my own oil. I asked an oil change place to grease the U-joints for me once and I was told my truck didn’t have grease fittings there! Unspoken implication (You dumb&ss truck owner!). That was the place that put the lawnmower-sized oil filter on my truck unbeknownst to me at the time.
When my truck was new, I took the truck to the Ford dealer where purchased for that free oil change, and both the service manager and then the tech said my truck did not have front axle u joints geease zerks. They were humble enough to allow me to show them the u joints grease zerks, and they were thankful afterwards.
