Sounds like a bunch of GM crap to me, alright!! DF's got me wondering, though... I ran my 390/C6 for a lot of years with several starters and never had a problem. But now I've still got the same 390 (rebuilt) but I've got a different C6 behind it. Maybe the flywheel is different from the one that I ran for so many years? Is there any way to tell short of counting the teeth? All I know is that it screeches every single time it cranks up. Not while the gear is engaged, but as it's backing away from the flywheel.
BTW DF, I always called it a "Bendix gear", too!! You learn something new every day!
My starter is the same one that I had when it was an FMX tranny truck. I pulled everything, put a stick in it, and re-installed the SAME starter. Whisper quiet. NO change.
I know they had two different teeth counts, but i wonder if that was back when they had PULL type starters(like pre-65?). I think anything after 65 would have a 184 tooth wheel in it. No expert, but just thinking out loud.
I know small block you can run into problems with tooth count depending on which size clutch you run, but I thought pretty much all "newer" FE's had 184 teeth.
