have a 2007 F650 with a 5.9 Cummins, when I turn the key on the lights on the dash come on there is no check engine light, I hear the brake booster motor running, and I can hear the electric fuel pump running, if I bump the key to crank it over just for a second, the fuel pump will stop, I then can pull the fuse out of the ECM wire immediately put it back in and if fuel pump will run again it is like something is resetting, I've replaced the ECM all the fuses are good, when I plug my scanner into the OBD it says it cannot communicate and the check engine light is not on, any help would be greatly appreciated
I can only assume it is good, I bought it new/reman, supposed to be pulg and play programmed to my vin and engine serial number, both ecms do the same exact thing, thank you for your help.
I have no particular expertise with this problem, but for clarity, it just started out of the blue? No preceeding codes? Nothing else changed on the engine?
I bought the truck in non-running condition, it is a rollback, I was told that it needed the fuel blood out of the fuel system after injectors were replaced the original owner got sick and couldn't finish it, when I picked the truck up there was no drive shaft in it and I had asked and the owner told me at had just shut off so they had it towed and they assumed that it was due to the injectors, but supposedly it was running and driving up and down the road every day until it shut off one day and wouldn't restart, I took the valve cover off checked all the injectors reset all the valves, and try to start it, when I realized the electric fuel pump wasn't working I started digging into the electrical and I found there was no fuse in the ECM fuse holder in the battery box I put that fuse in the fuel pump came on, I did some diagnostic testing and check for powers and grounds and the wiring going to the ECM and it had powers and grounds, I even took the grounds off and clean them, and replaced any ends that looked green or corroded, after following the diagnostic tree from the Cummins Insight program, according to the breakdown tree it needed an ecm, so I went ahead and purchased a new/reaman ECM that is supposedly a plug and play program to my VIN and engine serial number, it does the same exact thing as the old ECM,
Didn't bail. Just had other stuff to do. I think given what you have found the previous owner likely tried to troubleshoot at least to the point of removing the fuse for the fuel pump. Normally the first thing I would think of with a communication problem with the OCB2 is the ECM, but you already thought of that and it sounds like you have given this problem a good bit of thought. It is hardly helpful to say it is an electrical problem. As you were checking for power, did you take any voltage readings?
Thank you again for the replies, unfortunately I did not take any voltage readings, I did repair the wiring at the bottom of the fuel filter, also one other thing I want to note is I didn't realize this and it was stupid of me I had a Helper and didn't think about asking the helper to watch the gauges, when I crank the engine the tachometer is moving, also I know it's not a good idea but if I start it with ether and spray tiny little bit just to keep it running and then spray a lot to get it to rev up the tack is reading, I am beginning to wonder if it is the high pressure fuel pump, I will be out there today to attempt to diagnose that
I went out and checked the gauges do go up and the gauges do read when I crank it over with the key the tachometer reads, I did a quick preliminary check I took the fuel line off of both sides of the fuel filter with the electric pump running and it sprays diesel fuel everywhere, I cracked loose a fuel line on the fuel rail and I cracked loose lines at the injector tubes, I crank the engine over it has zero fuel pressure at those lines, I wonder if I can unhook the fuel pressure regulator wire and it will allow the fuel pump to be at full pressure just so I could check to see if it will run
Yes fuel is flowing through the filter I need a few extra minutes to check the fuel line at the CP3 pump, I am thinking I am getting fuel to the CP3 but nothing beyond that, I'm beginning to wonder if I can just unplug the fuel pressure regulator at the CP3 and allow it to get full pressure to see if I get anything coming out of any of the other lines
I am going to have to study the fuel system for your engine to comment further. My initial thought is this is something basic, but I am missing it. So a 2007 5.9 liter cummins.
Watch about the first 6 1/2 minutes of this video if you haven't already. It is showing how to trace the output to and through the injector pump on your enigne. It is well done and I think pretty clear.
I have the electric fuel pump running, there is fuel to the CP3, I have no fuel anywhere else I took the fuel lines off there is none, it will start and run on ether, I know that's very bad to do, when I spray a little more ether in it to get it to rev up very little fuel comes out of the number 6 injector line, I did not check the other ones I do not want to keep spraying ether in it I'm starting to think it needs a CP3
