Oil

Went and got an oil change for my 97 f150 and they put 5w20 in instead of 5w30 would that cause problems? Should I replace the oil with the recommended type?

I think you are ok....probably what the engine calls for anyway. Let 'er roll.

My 97 5.4 calls for 5w30 but my 2002 4.6 calls for 5w20 and these are very similar engines. I agree that you will be okay.

Also I’ve the dreaded white sludge but only up around the top of the oil fill tube nothing else in the crankcase or oil pan.

As a Ford tech, I cringed each couple of years as they thinned out the oils in search of fuel mileage (all of us did I think)
The thin oil is a necessity with the closer piston and bearing clearances the new engines have
Real glad to see some manufacturers bringing back the thicker stuff like BMW 0-50, 5-40 and the like
