I was having problems pulling the axles on my 54 and posted a few weeks ago asking if there were clips or pins holding them in place.
To all that answered, I thought you may be interested in knowing the outcome.
Just today I got them out by chaining one end of the housing to an auto hoist and chain the opposite axle to my F150. Gave it two good quick jerks and it finally popped out. Had to do the same on the opposite side.
The outer bearing race was badly rusted to the housing, even after soaking them in Silikroil for days. I previously tried a 5 ton pull back ram, a 6,000 electric winch while banging it with a 3# dead blow hammer, but nothing would budge them.
Nothing was damaged. New bearings, seals, etc. and it will be good as new......finally !!

How was water getting into the bearings? Could the vent be plugged?

Possibly. It sat for a number of years before I bought it. Moisture, humidity, may have just built up, the flange gaskets are in bad shape, It probably had more than one thing going on. .

With that much problem pulling the axles you outta pop the Diffy cover for a look see.

Did that before I even tried pulling them. Wanted to see if there were any clips or pins holding the axles that was causing the problem.

Ross, he's in Illinois - the atmosphere in the mid-west holds a LOT more moisture than in the west....

Thanks for posting that. I never heard of bearings being stuck like that!!

Well, If you are ever unfortunate enough to experience that problem, now you know how to solve it. Unfortunately it's kind of like pulling a tooth with a ball peen hammer.
