1986 F150 Radio differences

Hey yall,

I got a question about my radio setup for my 1986 f150. I just bought what I thought was the original radio for my truck. But I found pictures online and different thread showing an extra button. My radio doesn't have the AMS button like the other radios I saw do. Does anyone know why? and is it right for my truck? Thanks!

The AMS button would be on the far right under the other ones

They ran those same radios in cars and trucks through several years. I am sure features changed from time to time. I do not know if the automatic music search was original to your particular truck, I know the one I had in my 86 ranger had it. If you are playing a cassette tape, and have the AMS button pushed in, hit the fast forward or reverse button and it will fast forward till it detects the silence between the songs, and it will automatically pop it out of fast forward and start playing again. It actually worked pretty good unless you had a tape that was recorded live with lots of noise in between the songs. It didn't work that well on those. And it can cause extra wear on your tape head, it's running the tape on the head as it is fast forwarding or reversing to pickup the gaps between the songs.

I know nothing about these factory radios, but that sure was a nice unit for it's day, especially in a pickup. I did a quick Google search and every single truck I can find with that radio shows it with the AMS button, and both the 1985 and 1986 owner's manuals show it as well. Some may very well have been delivered without it, but 40 years later who knows?

Below is one of about a half dozen 85/86 trucks I found with that same premium radio.

Those radios look completely different than the one in my 86. Those features would have been great back in the (cassette) day. Here’s a pic of mine.

Are those head units 1.5 DIN size?

My 85 has a (cheap) aftermarket two-post radio in it. For a while l was searching for a newer, similar unit to avoid cutting up the dash panel until l realized that it was actually a single DIN sized hole with the two post faceplate added on.

Then l started looking at factory radios and found that most were similar to what you guys have. Without specs, I'm going strictly off of looks... they look bigger than mine. Is that right?

If my memory serves me right my unit is 3” tall 7.25” wide and 7.5” long if that helps.

Standard DIN is 2 x 7. They had a 1.5 DIN that was 3 x 8.

That's pretty cool, I did research on another thread and a guy on there said that they had that radio and a premium radio(like mine).

This was the radio in our '85. This truck is an XLT Lariat and Fuel Injected, so I would have thought it would have been fairly loaded (pw/pdl/cruise/tilt, OD trans and upgraded interior. This radio says otherwise.
