85-86 Radio Presets

My 85 Ford F-150 still has the original am/fm radio and everything works except the presets. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get them back in working condition?

I have a 1982 radio cassette player with the same problem. I bought it that way on eBay (fully disclosed) but would be nice to fix it. Might pull apart a junkyard one first to see what's inside before I touch mine. I'll let you know if I figure anything out.

I've never messed with a mechanical radio... concerning the buttons and their pre-setting ability, I for some reason envision a setup like a typewriter - lots of small, intricate parts that all need to fit together exactly one way and one way only... but I really have no idea.

So, what is the exact problem? What happens when you try to set them, i.e. pull a button out and then push it all the way in?

I pull them out and set the station and pus all the way in. The I push the other preset and it doesn't move at all if that makes sense.

Huh... what I have always done is first set the station, then pull and push the button... but I doubt it'll make any difference... I think the problem is in the clutch.

I have no idea either, but that is exactly why I am thinking of taking one apart at the junkyard so I can see what I am up against. If it looks obvious and do-able then I will work on mine. If I end up with a big pile of springs and wheels then I will know to leave mine alone. I don't care much for broadcast radio anyway, but it's just cool to have everything working.

I'm planning on getting an electronic radio from a 86 f150. Hopefully it still works

Hope to hear more on this. Mine I got for $5 from a radio shop that supposedly was rebuilt I never messed with my presets but I tried to the other day and the buttons wont even pull out.

I hope I could take it apart one day to fix that and find some kind of rubber O ring to fix my cassette player.

My 84 AM/FM/Cassette is the same. You can set one preset, but if you try to set the second, you lose the first.

I have had one worked on by Southern Electronics in Richmond VA and after a short
while the presets would not work. They have had it twice for this problem and the
presets still don't work.

It seems when some of the parts go bad there is no good fix for them.

The only one of three radios that I have for these trucks that the preset still
work OK is the original one that came in the truck, 1981, that is an AM/FM
8 track player unit. Took it out to replace it with AM/FM cassette player.
