hey guys im back.truck is know charging, but something is really killing batteries or there shot only 18 months old.I did want someone said replaced glow plug controller, looks like solenoid.the day fixed charging ,that evening kept trickle charger on too help alternator.that nite unplugged 12.6 volts.next morning 11.8 ..last nite drove truck in dark had lites on amp gauge in dash going down buit all good alternator working.came home parked got up had 8 vollts ???? weird thing i unplugged wires top of alternator, then it jumped too 10 volts.. havent been able too start too see if glow plug worked.
Do you have a basic DVOM? If so, run an amp draw test.
Hell, your glove box light could be stuck on or a misinstalled aftermarket accessory. And yes, you could have junk batteries too. They need to be 850CCA and short drives are killer on them.
removing the alt wire should not make volts go up unless a short is inside of it
remove all wires on alt and tape that big cable up
start charging batteries up
remove charger when full
wait 30 min
remove one battery ground and measure volts on both batteries
if not the same volts, your batteries are fighting
if the same, then alt diode might have a short
connect other bat ground
connect alt big cable
wait 30 min and check temp of alt, if warm, its a bad diode inside
whole thing drivin me batty.took alternator of tested 14.6 on bench.know at 2000 rpm only gettin 12.45 volts, same at starter solenoid same at bateeries.baterries 850 crank duralast gold premium.next will be yellow top opitma. dont think all new battery cables would hurt.I just pulled some breaker or type of fuse out of harness.at around back of hpop, close too glow plug controller.want too replace it once find out what is.
and yes this whole problem started when had driven diesel obs electric fuel installed.they put it on,brought home, leaking fuel above filters, took it back on sunday for a monday or tuesday fix.I jumped in rig with wife went too texas.came back friday am,got there was done,an that was first time it acted dead an barely started.i have pulled inline fuses out didnt seem too help.they have it wired rite too battery.I guess I should call xtreme diesel talk too tech ,that were bought fuel kit.
So you have a good alt on the bench, what does it output in the truck and at each battery at idle? Check off the back of the alternator itself, then at the solenoid by the passenger battery. Does the battery light in the dash even work?
YT Optima are not what they used to be for the cost IMO. DL Golds are good units and pretty much all I run in my stuff due to ease of warranty replacements as needed. Lost a G49 in one of my Mercedes finally after seven years.
Sounds like you removed the water in fuel relay, not a big deal. How are your cable ends? We barely got my '97 to spin over as the cables were so crappy. Click that link I provided you earlier and read all about ratty cables and increased resistance they can and do induce on your charging system. I have also dealt with bad alts as pointed out by Knotty. Pulled all fuses, still had a damned draw...unplugged alt, GONE. More common on the old Delco 10SI style where one could easily plug the cable in backward and would keep it alive always. 72 Cadillac issue I fixed and on a 76 IH Scout 2.
Digital Volt Ohm Meter. Even basic units can run an amp draw test up to 10A. Very simple and easy to perform for you. Do you have any NON FACTORY items installed? Alarm, stereo, CB/Ham, lights?
does alternator get pretty warm from motor?? or just get pretty warm if something wrong with it.I only drove very short today, maybe 22 miles came back pulled that breaker, layed on alternator pretty warm.
this alternator on the truck was new but took of had tested,on bench 14.6, know on truck at 2000 rpms alternator, starter solenoid, an batterys all say 12.4 volts. an i have alot of ad ons.big tranny cooler with fan an resistor too come on if get warm, driven diesel electric fuel.air lift on board air compresser for bags in back.edge tuner,3 gauges on windshield pillar.never had any problems too last add on driven diesel electric fuel.he has it going rite too battery i need too find out if this is correct.
