I'm getting ready to swap out the 302 in my '89 that has a smog pump. The replacement is from a '96 Explorer and does not have smog equipment. I'm already having issues with the air tube that's behind the converter and it's making the check engine light come on/flicker. I started thinking...if I remove the smog system completely won't the check engine light stay on? If so is there a way to fool the ecm into thinking it's still there?
You can remove the secondary AIR system. Just leave the control solenoids hooked up to the electrical harness. You will have codes if you run KOER diagnostics but no MIL.
The EGR system should be left intact. If you want to stop the carbon entering the intake tract block the exhaust supply. This will allow the valve to operate normally, keeping the computer happy, and put a real damper on sludge build up.
