long story but I have a 302 HO out of an 86 Mercury Cougar XR-7 (just the motor) I also have a M50D (Both I am rebuilding)
I do not have a wire harness or computer. Wanting to install that in my 1956 taskforce. what I need is what kind of wire harness that can be used, computer combo to power the fuel injection. I just see a lot of LS swaps and see it is overdone. A LS just needs 3 wires to have a running driving swap does the 302 computer have the same thing?
The Ford system needs power, ground, and a speed input signal that was originally sourced from an electro/mechanical sensor on the trans that also drives the speedo. The M5 should have that if it is from a an early Ford truck. The computer also controls a relay that powers the electric fuel pump, you don't have to use it but it's a neat way to have integrated control of the the pump so it's not running when the engine isn't. I'm not sure if I'm missing anything else..
Ideally you want an EFI setup from an 89-93 5.0HO car like a Mustang, Cougar XR7, or Lincoln Mk7, that's not so much because it matches the engine you have as it is that the engine wiring harness was stand alone in these years and the PCMs were a popular perfromance platform so there continues to be tuners and other aftermarket support for it.
Here is a wiring diagram for the EEC4 computer connection to all its sensors and actuators drawn up by Tom Moss some time ago. It's for 1988-1991 models, but should be similar to what a 1986 model needs. As Conan stated, it uses a MAF sensor, whereas the 86 used speed density, and the wiring is slightly different.
You might also try checking your local salvage yard or ebay for a take-off EEC-4 ECU and a wiring harness for a v8 engine. A casual search turns up this:
I have been doing some more looking around and have noticed the 96 ford explorer had a 302 ho 3 bar (gt40) engine could I use the harness and ecu and have obd2 ?
Yes.. but it get a lot more complicated, you will need a complete 5.0 Explorer as a donor as there are unique parts on it that are required and you would also need to use the explorer transmission.
