Hooked up to the gooseneck today for the first time with the new truck. The 7-way connector is in decent condition and all lights worked fine. When testing the brakes, I got a trailer discounted chime when I squeeze the slider on the TBC. No brakes at all, just the disconnected chime every time I squeeze the slider.
I will be running through the connectors and wires for the breaks tomorrow when the weather improves but I thought the group may have seen this before to narrow my search.
I wonder how that'd work with my aluminum hitch, lmfao
Al. is a good conductor.
As far as I thought anyway, the ground is not carried through the ball but rather through the harness whether it be a 4 wire or 7 wire system.
I believe the ground is connected to the frame of the trailers at the tongue then Into the harness across to the tow vehicle where it is also connected to the frame on that vehicle.
It sounds like you could have a brake wire that is grounding out. Where the brake wires go into the axle tube, but them out an inch and inspect the wire insulation. However, if grounding out is really happening then I would expect a fuse to blow. So it's either not grounding or it's a weak grounding out.
I get "disconnected" frequently with an older trailer (7pin). I keep a tube of dielectric grease in the tool box and slop some in. "Fixes" it 99.9% of the time.
Had the same exact thing happen with a small utility trailer I bought. One of the wires at the trailer brake hub came out of the scotch lock they used. So the circuit could not complete. For sure check your brake wiring on the trailer. After I fixed that wire, no more issue.
