I had an early 03-04 5r110 sitting on the floor for a while. Better than a year. It was a spare used Trany came out of a running truck. Symptoms - drives perfect every am give a couple hours in this cold. By time I get out of my hood, the atf temp is center line.
After a couple hours of driving and turning off the truck and sitting and back in - job to job contractor stuff, I start losing overdrive. In urban areas so I can run back roads so I spend lots of time in lower gears anyway. By the end of the day, it gets completely wonky and it seems like it’s slipping 3-4 as well. I know there is slippage bc I’ve now gotten a faint whif of burnt on the dip stick.
codes started w B and D solenoids. Some friction element codes. Rear output sensor codes(slippage). Any thoughts? Seems like cumulative heat is acting on something or some things.
Have to wait for them to reappear. Been stationary a lot today and haven’t seen them reappear between trips.
edit: didn’t appear at all today. But I wasn’t in and out of truck all day. Question on my mind is how these solenoids tend to fail? I’ve seen it to both ways. They die and they are dead open or closed and those that get hot and do unexpected things when they get hot - they usually don’t die completely bc you find them and replace them. I say that bc it’s an electronic/hydraulic system. It runs fine cold. My thought is I have a solenoid or two getting hot and acting up or it’s some sort of valve that gets hot. Maybe a seal I guess, but i would think w pressures in this thing a seal would blow out. Idk.
So, been driving this Trany for weeks. Went all way to Atlanta and back twice - no codes no nothing. Just all disappeared. Running great. Don’t know if maybe the solenoids been sitting a while and needed working a little to get it to behave correctly or what. Just started running right. No real explanation.
