Metal Door Handles - where to find them

Not long ago I replaced my 2008 F250 Harley Edition 6.4 with a 2016 Platinum. I love the truck (a lot) except for the chrome door handles on my black truck. Can't stand them. My 2008 had gloss black metal door handles and I've been trying to find a set of those to replace the four chrome ones on the 6.7. The trouble is that I cannot find the metal handles on the 6.4...everything I find is plastic.

Were the metal handles a limited run or something? Does anyone know how I can source a set, even if they are wrong color (I'm happy to get them painted).

Thanks in advance.

I don't recall ever seeing metal door handles since Ford introduced the 1999 body style, certainly not from the factory. They've all been plastic. If you had metal ones they must have been a special run in the aftermarket.

From the research I've done, I think those chrome ones are just plastic chrome, which is hard to paint. I suspect I'll end up with a set of the black textured ABS plastic ones and having them painted.

I would say then, keep looking.

I remember seeing some a few years back.

Maybe FORD makes them, and they could fit multiple years??

Interesting the metal ones are listed as textured. Thank you for the links. I think you may have found my solution.

Please post a follow up if you do decide to try the handles that LMC advertises as "metal". I found it odd that LMC only lists one side of the vehicle for metal handle availability, and not the other.

I've also found where other outfits (on eBay) have advertised "metal" handles, only to find out that they are simply decorative metal skins to be applied over the plastic handles, and that isn't the same thing as a solid metal handle.

Subscribing to see photos of metal LMC handles, should you decide to go that route.

Chromed plastic shouldn't be that hard to paint, it's not the same as hard chrome on metal. Just sand it with some 400-600, prime and paint. Even the hard chrome on metal can be painted, but you need to use diamond grit sandpaper to scuff it enough to get good adhesion and make sure it's 100% scuffed in all the tight areas. I've blacked out a lot of chrome trim like this and it always holds up fine.

Interesting, I didn't know that. I've seen so many trucks with that plastic chrome crap flaking off that it made me afraid to try to paint it. You're not sanding it completely off? Just giving it some texture for the primer to adhere to?

There's generally 2 kinds of plastic chrome you'll come across in cars. One is a softer chrome, sometimes with a soft clear coating. IDK what the material actually is, but it feels/acts alot like a vinyl type material. The other is more of a hard chrome. You don't run into in much on newer cars, but some pre-90's and almost all pre-70's stuff had actual hard metal chrome on plastic parts. Generally the OEM stuff is a quality coating, it's the cheap aftermarket stuff that falls off.

Just like with paint, if the original finish isn't already peeling, don't remove it. The hard stuff usually scuffs up pretty easily. Try red Scotchbrite first, usually found in most auto body or general paint areas. If that doesn't really work and it still looks shiny, step up to the sand paper, and use soapy water or it could get plugged up if it's the softer plastic. Make sure it's 100% scuffed and has no shiny areas. Use whatever screwdrivers/sticks/dowels/sponges/credit cards/etc/etc you need to to get in every crevice or it will peel. Then use a plastic rated primer or paint. The soft vinyl like stuff can sometimes be softened by wiping it with a solvent that's compatible with whatever paint you're using, then painting it once it evaporates. That'll soften it up for a good bond.

If you just want them to be black - like painted black, not textured black plastic, look for some smooth paintable handles.
Several trims of 99-16 trucks came with painted to match handles, so you'd have to find a set and get them painted. Like THESE SMOOTH ONES

You could also get some cheap DOOR HANDLE COVERS

Years ago, on eBay, I was able to pick up a pre-painted to match rear driver side door handle for my truck. I put it up front to eliminate the key hole.

I own a 2003 100 year anniversary edition, all black and handles are shiny black metal. I know they are metal because I pulled them off to remove key locks and installed jimml jammers plates and key hole with the jimmi jammer metal buttons on all 4 doors. Sorry, best pix I have... before jimmi jammers... So look for Spcual Anniversary edition for handles...

Check again.

Ford did not produce metal handles.

The 100th Anniversary Edition used the same smooth body colored painted handle as the Excursion.

All plastic.
