Hello big F-series experts! First time posting here, though I've spent lots of time on the site reading through tech tips. Saved a lot of time and frustration thanks to the shared knowledge of those on this forum.
I bought my second medium duty Ford earlier in the fall from an estate sale and would like to to confirm the year from the VIN number, as well as any other interesting info.
197x F750
Here's the VIN on the tag: F75FVA61943
Truck had been sitting for years, but with a few hours of effort we had the 391FT fired up again. A few more hours and couple hundred bucks got the brakes working decently well, enough for a test drive. (new master cylinder, 2 wheel cylinders on p/s front, relined brake shoes, some new hard and flex brake lines/hoses). Then discovered through the short shake-down run that the pinion seal on the rear diff was shot, but at least confirmed there was oil in it. Took the opportunity to drop in a new differential carrier with road-friendly gear ratios thanks to the good people at Weller. Freshening up the engine next, it's a fun project.
You're correct that the overall design appears to be similar, but I can tell you that I had a hell of a time bleeding the system on the F700 vs the 750. All 8 of the wheel cylinders (+master and booster) were replaced on the F700 so the parts should be correct and it still was a bear to get some pedal pressure. Maybe it's just the fact that the entire system was opened up. Maybe I just have more experience the second time around and got the method nailed. In any event, both trucks can stop reliably now!
