This is a sad first post. I got in an accident today driving in heavy snow conditions and collided right front of vehicle with left rear of semi truck trailer. The damage looks quite bad.
1. What do you guys think the cost would be to fix this damage in parts and labor? Is it even fixable?
2. Any advice on how to approach the repairs myself is greatly appreciated such as listing major components that may be damaged
Notes:
- I was able to start the vehicle after the crash.
- No airbags deployed
- Was able to drive 5 min to a gas station. Vehicle starts and runs well.
- there is a check engine light and the fan motor for the AC is not working and makes a whiny noise on high speed
- radiator is obviously really bashed in.
Its going to be hard to tell until you remove the hood, front fenders, bumper, grille, and all the bolt on bracketry, and see which hard parts of the frame and supports are buckled, and if they are fixable.
IF they are fixable then you fix them, and then just go get everything that mounts to them and outward all the way to the surface, from a parts truck in a junk yard, or new, the fenders are still available new, but the rest is probably junk yard diving.
Thanks so much for the info. The upper damage to the body was from the underside of the semi trailer... Upon further inspection it doesn't seem to have penetrated deep... And the main impact point (on the bumper) was with the semi tire.
But to your point I am worried about where the fenders and bumper mount up to the frame. I can do a decent amount of wrenching but custom welding or fab is where my skills end.
I agree with Master X, start taking off parts to really see where the damage is. You said that it still runs which is a great start. Front end parts are plentiful, remember the Ex shares it’s nose with the 250,350 so many parts are still available new but salvage yards are loaded with them. It is also an opportunity to install the 05 header and the better headlights being that you will be changing the bumper and grill . If you need a new radiator, there are some great aluminum replacements available. Remember you have a 7.3 which are in high demand so I would attempt to keep her going at all costs (within reason) In the end you might end up with a nicer Ex then you started with. Good luck
Just start taking bolts out and body parts off, down to where the motor and frame is exposed on the front and sides, then send us more pictures, from what you say, it may not be as bad as it first looks.
I mean... technically that should be 100% rebuildable. There's a seam in the frame where the generic front section welds on to the Excursion rear section. I don't see anything that can't be "undone" yet. Just a matter of how much you love your baby and how deep your pockets are.
Nevertheless, my condolences on your ride. I have a love/hate relationship with mine but I'd be PISSED if she got creamed.
