Crank no start
Little backstory:
- friday 12/2/22: turned off truck. Came back 3-4 hours later to start. No start just smoke coming out of exhaust. Starter decided to break as well as batteries were dying.
-monday 12/5/22: got to the shop charged batteries. Tried to start no crank due to poor starter
-tuesday 12/6/22: Replaced starter, charged batteries, plugged block heater in. Don’t think heater core is working.Cranking with smoke coming out of rear. charged batteries again, seemed as batteries were losing power. Truck would crank for a few second then get weak. Tested batteries, batteries would start at 12.4v after 3 second crank voltage would drop to 10.9-11.9. Recharge battery, rinse and repeat. Added jumper back for added power. Killed jumper pack. At one point early in starting exhaust would puff out large amount of smoke( seemed to me a good sign due to diesel burning and there is fuel in lines and injectors, checked fuel bowl is also filled).Once in a while the truck would hiccup like it wanted to start.
I hope that all made sense
*Prior to this there was no check engine light
*Prior to this locking steering actuator is broke
In my eyes there could be 3 problems:
1. batteries are too weak and should be replaced: batteries are causing ecm to not work properly and glow plugs not to work completly
2. Block heater is fried
3. glow plugs are not working. (however glow plug relay was warm to touch.)
Any ideas please help this is my daily.
block heater is easy to unscrew to replace. use a wet vac on rad cap so you dont lose all fluids when swapping out.
GP relay can go bad. get a stancor to replace it if bad. https://www.dieselorings.com/16-009-...lug-relay.html
can put wrench across big lugs fr 20 seconds and then crank it. I it starts then you got it.
ohm each UVCH outer pins to ground and see if about 1 ohm. if higher than 1 ohm you need new GPs
