I was washing the truck yesterday and I found this in the little pocket area where the wiper arm connects to the motor shaft
That looks like the little key that is falling out of them and is part of the reason for the recall. If you are lucky enough to find them you can just glue them back in place and not worry about it coming back out. Both of mine are gone, and when I took it in for the recall the dealership just said they were fine and didn't replace anything and then cleared the recall from my truck.
Yes, mine fell out when my truck was damaged at the Quick Lane oil change place.
The tech put them back in and used loctite to keep them in place.
I have yet to receive my notification to bring my truck in for the wiper recall.
Ford calls the keys "assembly alignment keys", they have been falling out of Ford wiper arms for a long time, could be 20+ years.
They (Ford) had wording that said, "NOTE: The alignment key is used for production only. The alignment key does not need to be reinstalled."
Now Ford has a recall on certain 2020-22 Super Duty’s (and other models) because of wiper arms that were manufactured with improper spline tooth hieght. It's possible that those alignment keys could help prevent the defective arms from stripping out, so if that is a concern, gluing them in is not a bad idea.. Mine fell out long ago on my 19, never did put them back in.
They fall out when you raise your wiper arms. It’s happened on all 3 Ford trucks I’ve owned since 2015. Each time, I used a small dab of silicone to put them back in and never had any other issues.
I bet I lost mine the first time I washed my truck since I usually raise the wipers so I can wash the windshield. Then when I'm done I follow up with a leaf blower to remove most of the water and then dry with a towel... I'll bet the leaf blower blew them away! lol. But, they must not be important because when I took mine in for the recall they said mine were fine and didn't replace anything (and mine are definitely both gone).
