Should I be concerned about this with regards to my tractor?
The same stuff I put in my F-350 HotShotsSecret EDT, and Better Diesel FBC, goes in my CAT 430F. However, if your tractor doesn't have a DPF there is no need for the fuel borne catalyst.
Same. His tests may not be perfectly laboratory controlled tests and I can think of ways to improve them, but they're good enough that I think going further would just be unnecessary diminishing returns.
I also have no delusions that because I use some product that means I won't have a problem, life doesn't work that way. Across all the pumps out there, their life will be a normal distribution in a bell curve. All we can accomplish by using a better fuel, or an additive, or anything else is to slide that bell curve in our favor, but there will always be outliers in the distribution. There will be some pump that will go 500k miles with the worst fuel in the world, and some pump that dies in 5k miles with the best fuel in the world. We also basically only hear about situations that fall out on the edges of the curve; the exceptions be them good or bad but by human nature we tend to only report on the bad ones. That's why anecdotes are dangerous.
I don't want to scare anybody into thinking you need an additive or else, or that any additive comes with guarantees.
this is the best reply. If you have a "sensitive" pump your problem will occur early (additive or not). If you have a good one (which most are) the additive might get you the extra 100K miles if you even keep it that long. If you think additives are a joke, don't use them but then don't brag about your 5,000 mile oil changes either, trust Ford. I chose the power stroke based on input from a buddy who is a lineman that sees dozens of these trucks in his yard and hears every story from the other yards about long idle time, abuse, lack of maintenance. These things take a beating and just keep working. And if you joined the forum 2 weeks ago to complain about your CP4 pump... I blame you, you probably put DEF or gasoline in the diesel tank. But if mine breaks next week I will be blaming all of you if they deny my warranty claim because i followed your recommendations
Thanks so much for this thread. I'm a modern diesel newbie. So, 3k miles with no additive. After reading this thread I ordered a gallon of Opti Lube with 2 small 40 gallon dose bottles (empty.) 1 dose for 40 gal regular or 20 gal premium. I had a little over half a tank so put in a dose right away. Then filled both dose bottles and put them under the back seat in a zip lock bag. Today I topped the tank with 22 gal and another dose. It's super noticeable how much quieter it is now and at least seems more responsive. I'm sold on fuel addative. Next I may try Hot Shots or one of the others but I consider this money well spent.
One 5 gallon pail will bring my 50 gallon truck tank to B10. My understanding is that B2.5 is superior to any bottled additive for lube value. Still needs anti gel and anti algae as well as water de-emulsifier or emulsifier depending on what you believe.
I just started using PM22 just because it is a motorcraft badged product.
I saw a tip about using the Lucas top cylinder lubricant bottles to fill it out of, and was about to purchase some to do that with, but noticed at my local rural king had "gumout" branded items with what looked like a better bottle for 2.99 a treatment.
I chose that option and dumped it into my lawnmowers gas tank, once I have the 2 bottle I bought drained and dried I will start using them to put PM22 in since I bought a gallon of it.
I have used Power Service silver bottle for years. No issues.
Also have used Ford PM 22 and experimented with a few others like Stanadyne.
Anyone else but me notice that PM 22 and PS smell exactly the same. And used to look the same.
But last time I checked, a while back, they changed the color. Still smell the same, exactly the same. Wonder who makes PM 22 for Ford?
Difference is the dosage, with Ford PM 22 the recommended dosage is significantly less. So I use PS since it is much less expensive at a similar doseage.
So far so good approaching 389k on original injectors and no issues! This is in S Fl with 1000's of stoplights everywhere you drive! Lots of stop and go driving.
A friend of mine was just visiting FL. Could not believe you can hit so many stop lights in a short drive. I live in WPB but South FL has amazing traffic. More people have moved to FL in the last few years. Fleeing their home state. The traffic this year is brutal!
Any thoughts on Mobil diesel Efficient branded diesel? They claim to have the additive premixed with the fuel.
