Would a CPS Sensor cause the Torque Convertor to unlock? I had a rebuilt transmission with a failure after 5 thousand miles on it (TC shot which then ruined 3rd gear). This is the 4th rebuild in two years, so either I'm really unlucky, or something is causing it to eat up transmissions. I don't tow like I used to, so its mainly just a weekender for me, and didn't have any CEL on until the stalk started to blink recently. Shop is saying that CPS code that they pulled could have been the culprit? I wasn't sure if it was just finding TDC during starting or if it played a bigger role in our trucks and could have unlocked the converter?
I would be curious of the build quality/parts installed. The unit is very robust.
Guys here recommend Forscan to pull your own data and codes, I do not know much about it but am looking into it for other rides of mine. I pull data with my Edge Insight. There have been scattered reports on here from guys rebuilding the PCMs, correct taillight bulbs, reman PSOMs, all seem to help or cure this.
I believe Mark noted early MLPS units also caused repeat failures as the trans becomes confused regarding gear position.
Thanks guys - I upgraded to a triple disc heavy duty torque converter, and found a shop that gave me a 3 year warranty. Also upgraded trans cooler and lines just incase there was debris in there. Hopefully this is the last time. Just can't believe I'm having this bad of luck with the E40D. It's not like I'm making 1000 ft pounds of torque like the newer diesels.
The grey/white and brown/white wires were torn and "repaired" on my OBS, it caused my transmission to go hay wire from unlocking the trans to down shifting to third while cruising on the highway.
Forgot to add that those two wires lead directly to the APS (accelerator position sensor)
So check the wiring, mine were torn near the steering column where the shifter cable attaches to bracket.
Also check the trailer wiring as it too can cause weird things with transmission shifting.
I had my trailer plug bent and allowed water to pool inside the connector causing shifting issues with my truck.
Thanks again for the replies. I dropped the truck off with my chip in stock location and they did the test drive after the rebuild stating everything was working as it should. When I put the truck back into performance mode to make use of my upgraded injectors I notice that the 3-4 shift has a lot of slip to it. RPMs will flare up during the shift for a brief tic then down shift. (does this no matter how hard I accelerate, stock tune shifts as it should) I always just assumed that this was because my trans was going bad. Now, so soon after a fresh rebuild I'm starting to wonder if perhaps the my tune does not have the best shift perimeters built into it, and causing extra heat? idk, still guessing. I really hope it's not wires. I don't feel anything while driving other than the slipping 3-4 while using the performance tune. I'm currently using stock to be safe.

a lot of tuners or tunes will adjust transmission pressures, unless you specify to your tuner that you have a built transmission they will typically do this.... I had this issue with the ts6, and unless specified on hydra tunes this can happen. I would check there.... as I had this exact same problem.
You can do a test in 00 if it shifts fine, that's your issue.
Thank you d2freak82 - It seems to shift fine in stock and also what I'm assuming is daily driver tune. The high HP tune has a slip in 3-4. I have to bring the truck back next week so the shop can check the trans pan for debris after a thousand miles. I might have him take the truck for a ride and look at the different tunes. I dropped it off in stock, so they likely have no idea that it's shifting that way with the chip.

It's tuning, so no they definitely won't know that - nor will they fix it unless they tune the truck. You need to talk to your tuner to fix.
Thanks team - sadly I drove the truck a few hundred miles. Parked it for the weekend. Went to drive it Monday and it would crank with no start. It would start in high idle but felt like it was missing half the holes and wouldn't drive anywhere in gear. I suspected some sensors went bad based on the fact it ran fine last I drove it. I towed it to my shop and they told me the fuel bowl was full of rust, and likely has made its way into the injectors. Suggesting me to rebuild injectors and overhaul and clean fuel system. This is a major project, right after an expensive transmission repair. major kick in the *****. At this point (engine has major blow by but was running fine) I'm not sure what to do. Might look for a donor engine to replace mine if I'm going to sink this much more into her. Was really hoping it was just a sensor. Idk. waiting on pictures and might drive there tomorrow to look at the fuel bowl. Anyways - just ranting. love these trucks, but they can put a hurting on the wallet
