will the cps always throw a code? do they just fail or can they just make your engine run rough without throwing a dtc? Awhile back my torque converter and other tranny parts went out ,the trans shop had a bunch of transmission codes along with cam position sensor code he said the transmission caused the cps dct.when all this happened the o/d light was flashing and my tach. quit working.could the trans. cause the cps dct,or might i still have a bad cps with no codes.still runs rough it shutters at speeds under 50 mph when you push the peddal. trans shop tells me the transmission has no proglems.i'm trying to eliminate the cheaper problems first.
If it does this when it's cold or not up to temp. It's prolly not the poppets. Either way, I would try a new cps. It's definitely cheaper and more than likely is the culprit. Good Luck
This is just my bad experiences with CPS's. When mine went bad, the truck will stall, not run rough. I replaced one in my current truck, one in my previous '99 PSD, a neighbors' F250 truck ('00) and one at a campground in Utah for a retiree (dunno the year but it had the early headlights) and they all would stall and start - not just run rough. Just my experience - not gospel.
Don't get one from NAPA, if you don't have problems now, you will. Get an OEM for about 30 bucks. Really don't sound like a CPS problem, shutter sounds like a balance problem.
Get a cheap one from Ford. Some of our sponsors sell them for $15 + S/H. Don't buy it from NAPA. I've read too many stories about quick CPS failures (sometimes right out of the box) from NAPA or parts stores.
I don't think the CPS is your issue, but as you pointed out, this is a cheap test, and it's a good idea to have a spare anyway. Good Luck.
