Three on the Tree

I am re-installing the steering column, but I can't seem to be able to put the shifter in reverse or first gear... any suggestions?

Shift problem

Did you line up the 2 levers with a setting pin at the base of the column?

Ahm… no… I took it off the car, cleaned and painted it, and put it back. I made sure the levers on the transmission were both in neutral before connecting them to the “arms” on the steering column.

Shift problem

There is a 3/32” hole in the levers that lines up with a receiver slot at the base of the column. It is either that or 3/16” the size of the pin that you insert to lock it together.

Does the shift lever move up and down freely as if you were going from R and 1st to 2nd and 3rd? Did you disassemble the column or leave it in one piece?

It moves freely up and down from 2nd to 3rd, but I can’t pull the shifter towards me to get it into position for R and 1st. I pulled out the steering rod, but otherwise I left it in one piece.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my question. Picture a capitol letter "H". Does the shift lever move from one side to the other? Does it pull the lever up towards the steering wheel? When I worked on my column, I had a hell of a time getting the key to line up through the shift lever arms and spacers. If everything isn't lined up, then the shift tube can't travel downwards to engage the R/1st arm.

I understand the H-pattern, all my old Saab's have column shifters, and I learned to drive in those, however, on the Saab's, the shift linkage runs parallell with the steering column, and not inside of it. I can move the shifter up and down to engage 2nd and 3rd, but I cannot pull it towards myself to get it into position to engage the shifter arm for R and 1st. I am wondering if there is something inside the steering column that could be rusted stuck? Or is it only a matter of alignment? Is there a way to find an exploded view of the column, with the parts marked? I have looked around and I can't find any, not even in the shop manual I bought.

The inner shift tube has a rectangular key welded on it. The two shift arms and nylon spacers, #s 7302 and 7303, have a matching slot for the key. If the shift tube was pulled out far enough and the bottom arm or a spacer moved, then when the tube was pushed back down, it can't engage the lower arm. It probably has more to do with the nylon spacer since the arms can be lined up. You will need to pull the shifter tube out or loosen it so that you can align the spacer.
That is what the problem sounds like to me.
If you haven't looked at the parts by themselves, go to Dennis carpenter website and look for shift lever arms or spacer.
Hope this helps. I got through it. I have less hair now. LOL

Is there something holding the shifter tube inside the steering column? A locking pin, clip, nut, washer, bearing, weld? Anything at all? Or should it just pull straight out after the steering wheel, shifter, blinker switch and all those parts are gone, and I can see the tube? I can wiggle it a little bit side to side, but that's it... frustrated

Sorry Obscure 69,I honestly don't remember. From the engine side, Can you see any of the nylon spacers? I'm thinking that if the middle spacer is not aligned, then the keyway on the shift tube maybe hanging up on it, preventing the tube from being removed.

Shift tube

The best way to service the shift system is with the column removed and secured in a vise. Getting everything lined up on reassembly is very difficult if the column is still in the truck.
