Question tranny swaps

I'm looking for info on trannies for my '78 F-150 2wd with a mildly built up 300-6. I have a NP435 in the truck already but i find that the spacing between the top three gears are fairly far apart and i have to take my engine to the max to get any power in the next gear. I would love to find a tranny with a closer gear ratio and was even thinking of a overdrive transmission like a tr3550. I like this tranny because i can reposition the shifter so it would work well with a truck. Is there a lot of modifications i would have to do to install one of these on my engine? or would a Ford AOD be a better choice? if so is there a lot of modifications to install one of those on my engine? Any help with these questions would be appreciated.

AOD will be a good idea, but you should check the rear axel ratio, it should be 3.55 or higher.

Or if you love electronics like me you can try a challenge upgrading to E4OD...

Regards;
