Hello !
I m still owner of an old RV (Ford e350 1987 w351) and novice in mechanical.
I wonder if my automatic transmission (I think it s a C6 model) need some attention.
No problem to report at this moment (no noise, nothing) but my mileage is almost 62K miles so maybe I need to change fluid of my transmission or something else..
The fluid needs to be changed every so often. You can change the filter.
The C6 has bands that need to be adjusted every so often. It was a pretty straight forward from what recall.
Make sure the kickdown cable is adjusted correctly.
The vacuum modulator has a service life, and can be adjusted a bit to change the shift schedule a bit. If the vacuum hose for the modulator is not in good condition replace it and make sure is safely routed.
Make sure the fluid cooler circuit is in good shape. Ford often gave the C6 under sized auxiliary coolers. If that is the case get something bigger.
351w/c6 in a motorhome is a good combination. Compare your current transmission fluid to some fresh stuff by dribbling alittle of each on some white computer paper. You can use the dip stick to get a few drops out. Let it defuse into the paper. If you see a faint dark ring around the transmission fluid stain, it's time to change it.
thank you so much for yours advices!!
Do you have any link for a tutorial to change fluid of my C6 transmission and do adjustment describe by R&RFord ?
I m able to do my engine oil change but for the transmission.. it s totally new for me
most trans pans do not have a drain plug, so it is kind of a messy affair.
you need to unbolt and drop the trans pan to drain the fluid. what i do is loosen the bolts to try to get it to drain out one corner. than when it slows to a drip remove the rest of the bolts.
clean the pan, change the filter. put pan back on and fill the trans back up.
