Thanks for the shout out to all the veterans Steve. Our local Ivar's Seafood restaurants offer a free meal today with proof of service so I'm going to go to one of them for lunch today. I'm celebrating 40 years this year since I joined the Army in 1982.
Well, it is a "free" meal (within a limited menu) with proof of service - so it's not really free when I think about it - thus in keeping with the "there's no such thing as a free meal" mantra. But I appreciate them for it. Lots of local places offer deals for veterans today. I bet they do in a lot of other places, too.
Thanks Buzzard! Same here with the free meals today. Been 56 years since I joined the AF., 53 since that picture was taken with my trusty International 1700 4X4. Even though I was a munitions troop they put me in charge of vehicle maintenance at the off-base bomb dump. Permanant off base pass, best damn job I ever had.
ibuzzard,
Thanks, I'd do it again if I could. I served on the Super Carrier...USS Constellation CVA-64. Worked the flight deck. I remember the steam cat's were sending 20-25 ton planes aloft...in 280', doing that in 2 to 2-1/2 seconds...going from dead still up to 180 mph. Our longest time out working 14-16 hrs a day was for 49 days straight...no weekends off. I remember thinking," These planes will give the ground troops support that they wouldn't have if we weren't here off the coast of S. Viet Nam."
39 years ago I had a small taste of combat and that was enough for me. One guy in my company C got a Purple Heart and two of us got one of these. I'd take this over a Purple Heart if only because it never sounded fun to get shot! It was my dogged determination that really impressed them. No kidding.

Thanks for the link. I’ve never had this day off of work, so I don’t think about attending any functions. To me, the reason for serving is akin to one’s faith - a private matter. It’s a good time to catch up with friends who served. Thanks for starting the thread.
Thanks ibuzzard and to all those who served.
I got my “Veterans burger” and fries paid for at Freddy’s. Thanks Freddy’s,
I’m a former active duty Marine, Semper Fi !
