I have a 75 F600 with a 330 we picked up and am doing a swap for a 390 I had around. I used all the front structure and it fit perfectly and the crank snout matched. My question is what won’t work. Can I just use the 390 harmonic damper with the 330 pulley’s. Also, What flywheel do I need. The starter for the 390 has 11 teeth and 9 on the 330. I believe I have 188 flywheel and need 184? What flywheel will be right for this heavy truck? Thanks for the help!
If your crank snout was the same on the 390 as the 330, you had a 330 MD. Based on the links below and others I believe the 330 MD is internally balanced just like the 390 and other FEs. (410/428 are external)
You should look at the flywheel from the 330. It should NOT have a weight cast into it. If it does, it is for a HD engine and will shake your new motor badly.
If it has no weight and you have confirmed the 330 is an MD, then it should work on the 390 with the truck bell and starter.
However, you should check the pilot hole in the 390 crank to make sure it will work with the truck transmission.
You should check the front balancer/spacer/pulley to make sure it mates properly with the front cover. As OEM, a 330 MD used the same front cover as all the other FT engines, but used a bushing to reduce the hole to the smaller MD crank snout.
As to pulley and balancer alignment, you'll have to check-this is another hazard of the FE/FT swap.
