My 1997 Ranger 2.3 Auto, Heater Temp Control is stuck on high temp, you can turn it from cold to hot but, once you do it's hot only. Turning it back and forth has no bearing. Folks I've spoken to scratch their head. Truck has never seen a winter, 231,000 miles, plenty of maintenance done, would like it done right the first time, anyone out there familiar?
Some Ford Rangers of that era have blend door issues. The heater blend door actuator fails or the blend door itself fails. In your case, I'd suspect the actuator. You can look up a few videos online to see some issues and what it takes to get it fixed.
You really want to go with a genuine Ford replacement on the actuator, if it's still available from Ford. The aftermarket blend doors have some improved versions, including one that replaces the plastic door with an all-metal version, if you want to shell out the bucks. (I'm assuming that this company is still in business, but I haven't checked lately)
Of course, before replacing any parts, do some troubleshooting so you aren't just a parts replacer.
I had this problem with my 97 ranger years ago and found that the blend door was broken. Verify your actuator works for the blend door, the actuator is not hard to replace. If actuator is working, to replace blend door requires dash removal. I found a thread in this forum that showed you how to repair by drilling a hole and putting a nail through it(actuator) which allowed it to mesh with broken blend door. I made this repair around 150,000 miles and drove it to 342,000 miles and it still worked. However there are videos on youtube that show you how to cut a hole in heater box and replace blend door with out dash removal. This is a common problem on Fords of this era. Also there is a company called HeaterTreater that makes blend doors and sells a kit with instructions to make this repair without removing dash. https://heatertreater.net/ford-ranger-93-08
I am assuming you made sure actuator is working.
Steve
Because the system seemed to work initially (going by the original post), I would put the actuator on the high suspect list. But I'm sure it'll get troubleshooted and fixed.
