Well, this would be my first experience with piston slap and I’ve had my fair share of vehicles over 200k. I’ve tried premium a handful of times. I’ve tried it stock and with the tunes.
I don’t drive with a heavy foot or abuse my truck but the noise is mainly from 2-3k rpm. Light pedal or not, it’s still cacklin away.
I appreciate the responses. I’ll post some more photos and a little video of my balance shaft when I get the chance. Not sure how much play it’s supposed to have but it does have some.
And I’ll stick with the common answer of piston slap. It makes sense, just sucks to hear it rattlin away.
A little bit of play, not sure what’s allowed. I’ve read that the pedestals aren’t interchangeable/swapable and have to be taken to a machine shop to be in spec’d/replaced (no bearings to change out).
It’s still pretty dirty even after all the cleaners I tried.
I did hear a fellas 99 6.8l at the grocery store. I asked him if he had any issues with engine noises and he fired it up and it had some knocking (piston slap) for about 10 seconds or so. Said it only did it on start up and no issues other than that.
It kinda sounded like what I got going on, mine must be a bit different (more worn?) to be doing it consistently at certain rpm’s.
It made it through the winter so it’s probably the nature of the beast. Just annoying while it’s rattling away like I have a loose exhaust clamp..sigh..
