Trying to avoid dumping my starter if it's not actually bad. 2008 F-350 3v V10. It's started not turning over on the first or sometimes several subsequent tries. Doesn't even really sound like the starter is actuating. After several tries it'll start and crank up fine. Battery is new and kept charged.
If this is the starter, any recommendations on a cheap replacement? I use this truck maybe 3-6 times a year for trips to pick up lumber or gardening supplies.
When the starter is not making contact have you checked the starter solenoid is getting a signal from the ignition switch? Are all the battery cables and connectors making good contact in the starter circuit from the battery to the starter?
I would suspect the solenoid or the ignition switch.
It sounds as if the ignition switch is doing it's thing, but I can test it when I get a chance. Battery cables were removed cleaned and reattached when I removed the battery for winter storage/charge.
Double check you have power at the battery connector on the starter--if 12V there you might have a starter beginning to fail. Since you've already taken the proper steps with the cables and terminals that might be the only remaining problem--do I assume correctly this happens whether the engine is hot or cold?
I don't know "cheap" starters--top tier for me or nothing.
Yeah happens hot or cold. I don't typically use cheap components on vehicles, but for something I use less than 10 times a year, I can make the exception. Heck I've had to change the oil due to age not miles. First time in my life having a vehicle reach that point
