Neutral Idle Up

I have viewed 50+ threads/forums for a related issue and some guidance with no luck. EGR, EBP fuel filter, ect...? I'm not certain what to look for. Please point me in the right direction. Here's what I'm noticing...

A few days ago my engine sounded odd at or around 2000 rpms city driving under 45mph. I should say sounded different than my first 107K miles of driving her.

I got home this afternoon and put her in neutral and slowly idled up to 2200 rpms. At around 1900 - 2000 rpms the engine started stumbling or feeling out of balance. No unusual noise, just a stumble through 2200 rpms. Is this normal?

I am aware of and have experienced the stumbling in wet/damp weather while towing on the Oregon coast but have never experienced this in idle. I hope someone can give me an idea on where to start looking or repairing.

2008
Job 1
108k miles

Thank you,
Rob

when was the last oil change, fuel filter change and have you done anything with your coolant? How about your air filter? Pull you Maf sensor carefully and look at it.

Ford replaced radiator hose (8C3Z-8286-C) at 107K miles and flushed the cooling system.

I have checked the air filter but I wouldn't know where to begin with the Maf sensor.

I am buying a Helm service manual for Christmas. Do you recommend a specific manual (e.g. FCS1461108 or FCS1461108)?

Thanks again,
Rob

ok, so If I understand you right then you have several thousand on the filters? Might be an issue there so I would change them. Also how many miles on the oil? Anymore than 5K i change mine. Ford says you can go 10K but I would not.

Maf sensor is right there at the air cleaner. Beside the filter minder. Has a couple wires going to it. Takes one of the special screws. Be careful with it.

What you want to do is to look at the element. It should be clean and obviously not broken. No buildup on it.

Also check the condition of the tubing as it goes into the turbo and see if that is clean and no oil residue.

Thanks Senix. I meant to type I change oil at 105K miles. I'll check the Maf and inspect the tubing. Tomorrow. I appreciate the information.

Only other thing I can think of is maybe the EGR valve is getting sticky. You could try a fuel injection cleaner as well. Diesel Kleen makes one compatible for ULSD motors.

I double checked the air filter and I was surprised how much debris and dirt has accumulated in 8K miles. I tapped out as much dirt as I could. There were about 5 or more drops of oil accumulated at the bottom of the filter seal. I don’t know if this is normal. Otherwise everything else was clean and the Maf intact.

I idled up to 1900rpm and held the pedal while the engine revved up and down from 1900 – 2000rmps all on its own. I’m still missing something.

I'll check into Diesel Kleen products and inspect the ERG valve. This is the original EGR.

Would you recommend I buy an updated EGR Valve while I'm at Ford for a new air cleaner and fuel filter kit?

Replace the EGR valve I understand is a chore. Requires a special tool, usually the housing breaks as well.

Updated EGR valve deletes the coolant line, so that routing gets changed as well.

I don't know if that is the problem at all. Just brainstorming here.

If you had access to codes maybe there is one in there that is pending that could give a better clue.

I would suppose the dealer would be more than happy to run a dianostics on it but that will be a few bucks.

Maybe see if one of the techs would speak with you for just a moment?

I suppose you certainly have nothing to loose with running some injector cleaner in there. I may also help the EGR valve as well.

Thank you again. I have an appointment with Ford on Monday. I'll keep you posted on what the issue(s) turns out to be so you can add to your knowledge base and continue to help others.

Ford inspected my truck...

Run for codes - no codes pass all
Run power balance - pass
Run relative compression test - pass

Found fuel "filter plugged very restricted."

Replaced fuel and air filters.

All is good again.

Yes, that will do it..

we are using the severe duty cycle in the manual..

change oil & filter every 5000 miles, fuel filter every 10,000 miles.
you were at 20,000 on fuel filter.

I just replaced my air filter again at 60,000 miles (about every 30,000)..

Sam
