Hello, How much paint will it take to paint a 60 panel truck ? I have the doors and jams all done. I am using nason ful-thane 2K urethane single stage. Plan on using clear for the finale coat. No hurry on the answers. It will be this spring or early summer. Thanks All.
My factory Candy Apple red had a lot of clear and took at least 3 coats just to cover and get an even color.
Mine was also a single stage, so if I was going to cut & buff I would have to put at least 3 to 4 more coats.
Think I did 4 coats, no cut & buff with this single stage, and it took almost a full gallon and I had white down each side.
BTW if you are doing single stage why the clear top coat?
The white covered pretty good

Very nice truck and love the color. They go great together. Last time I painted was ragoon red with acrylic enamel 30 years ago. This new paint is a big learning curve for me. I used nason single stage for bumpers and rims. Just did jams with ful-thane 2K urethane topcoat. This spring I will paint the truck. New paint products and new devilbiss spray gun, completely different to get used too.

I had a paint shop recommend single stage with clear too. I think because I told him the new paints are new to me. Maybe it gives a more uniform surface?
Thanks on the truck and they are the factory colors it had when it left the plant.
I used NAPA paint forget what their low dollar paint line is called but I was happy with it.
Only thing I did ask for because it was hot in my garage, not a professional spray booth that you can control the temperature, was high temperature reducer.
They never heard of such a thing and in checking found it so that is what I used.
The high temp reducer slows down the drying and let's the paint flow out so less orange peel if any.
I also was using a new to me HVLP gun, Eastwood Start line 3 gun kit.
Other than using the small gun for inside the cab, door jambs and under side of hood i had naver used a HVLP gun before.
I changed over the small gun to use the large cup so all 3 are large cup guns, 1 gun is a primer gun I have not used as I used and old Binks #7 gun for primer.
I also use the Kcups for easy clean up.
no paint is in the cup it gose in a plastic liner that fits the cups then a lid. Throw the liner away, little reducer thru the gun head and done.
I feel the start line guns are a good spray gun and people ask who did the paint job and if 2 stage.
They are shock when i say i did it, single stage and no sanding & buffing.
Take your time and it will turn out great.

II am happy with it. Not taking it to the fair. All work done by myself. Just a driver and haul the dogs to the vet. As is will be.
Looks pretty nice. It will be easy to find in the parking lot. We went to Great Lakes for boot camp graduation years ago and rented a silver grey Accord. Half the cars in the lot were grey rental Accords.
Yep easy to find is an under statement.
My red & white truck also stands out think why most stop to look at it.
It is nice when someone asked who did the work and you can say you did it all.
The only one that has to be happy with the job / build is you, the he11 with the others.
I talk to others at different show i go to with my truck, just to go as i dont plan to bring anything home, and guys that have big money in thier cars / trucks only take them out for shows and back in the garage.
They don't get to enjoy them like us that build nice drivers.
I have been told mine is to nice to haul the weekly trash but I am enjoying it and that is all that counts.
That sums it up. We used to do same thing. After certain remarks my wife would not repeat, we stopped going to shows. You get more work done at home. The catholic priest in 67 said you will never make it to heaven in that 55 ford.
Same here. I painted it myself with Rustoleum. Tried different thinners and amounts until it sprayed fairly well. I just wanted a truck that I could drive and not be afraid of getting the paint messed up. Not perfect, but I can say I did it myself. And I am not ashamed to say it.
