Undercoating

For those of you who live up north where they salt and de-ice the roads all winter long, do you do any type of rustproofing to your new vehicles? There's a place nearby that applies NHOU wax and oil film that is supposed to provide lifetime protection against rust.

My F150 is 5 years old with 100k mi and this summer I went around with a can of rust encapsulator and sprayed all of the surface rust, but there really wasn't much damage. I'm not sure if undercoatings like this are a waste of time or not.

The one thing I will stay away from is applying any type of solid undercoating. I've seen those start to peel away after they start rusting from the inside out.

I get mine done every fall with Fluid Film before they start the salting here in hills of NW CT. Cost $190 out the door this year. The rubberized encapsulating types are a bad idea.

Oily/Waxy sprays are worthwhile. Fluid Film, Krown etc, all good.

What are you coating with the Fluid Film/Woolwax? Only the steel parts or the aluminum too?

They basically coat the whole underside using a spray gun. They spray around certain things like the transfer case housing and some wire bundle connectors, but pretty much everything gets covered. No need to do body panels like inside the doors etc. like you would on a steel truck.

Is there any reason not to? I know the doors themselves are aluminum, but they have internal steel components.

No you could, and maybe people do. The steel trucks they would drill and fill the doors, sills and cab corners because of the seams that would rot out. Not an issue with the aluminum body. They end up spraying lots of aluminum underneath because it's faster and to get the steel fasteners and brackets.

I’ve been using Fluid Film for 6 years now on all my vehicles. Awesome stuff.

a 12oz aerosol can is about 10-11 bucks but I only use that for quick touch ups. When I do a whole vehicle before winter I use a 40.00 gun I got off that rain forest company online and shoot it on at about 85-90psi. A gallon is 40.00 and lasts a long time.

Had my 22 platinum done in NHOU .. back in April… it holds up very well in wet conditions.. stays very tacky..they did the whole underside and wheel wells..how it does over the winter… time will tell.. I have heard rave reviews on their product from a few local guys that use it…$375 it cost me.. for that kind of money .. it’s worth it..

a quick search on the google machine reveals its petroleum based i.e. oil. A guy could save money spraying used motor oil. Fluid film is much better and better for the environment being lanolin wax based. The military along with many many large companies which are listed on the fluid film site use the product.

NHOU being petroleum based, I’d worry about it swelling seals and such, but of course the ppl applying it will say otherwise.

Not to mention how the car smells after application. Barely noticed the WoolWax.

Wool Wax outlasts Fluid film. It is two-three times the viscosity and stays in place a lot longer. It is what is on my 19 F-450, sprayed on in 2019 and still coating everything except the differential where it burned off. Only downside is you get messy crawling under it to do anything.
