Hello all. So I bought an 06 SD about 2 years ago. Don’t know a lot about diesels but I learn fast. So here’s my situation. When I get up to about 60+ mph and maintain about 1800 rpms there’s a loud grinding noise. If I accelerate and rpms get above 1800 and the speed to 70+ the noise goes away. If I maintain 60-65 mph on the HWY it makes the noise constantly but I don’t loose any speed, like it doesn’t feel like it’s slipping out of gear. Noise sounds and feels like it may be coming from about the middle of the truck, maybe transfer case area. I tried google but never really found anything similar, only found IWE, flexplate, inspection plate….those aren’t easy fixes it seems. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hmm, are we sure he's just not hearing the fan turn on? Maybe he's got other issues making him run hot? Don't ask me how I know. Actually, I expect there's a lot of owners who never hear that fan turn on in years of their daily driving routines. It can be unsettling for someone who doesn't know what's going on.

What fan is that? The engine's not running hot. I can drive all day running errands and it don't over heat even in the South Texas summer. Just makes noise when I get up to ~60mph and 1800 rpms.
That's what I kinda said - a lot of owners never hear the fan. If you'd ever heard it, you'd know the fan I'm talking about. It always spins, but the computer tells it to spin faster, and when it does, sounds like a freight train.
And, if you say that you're not running hot because your dash gauge never shows hot, then you might be running hot. That dash gauge is useless.
There's a few things that can trigger the fan to kick on. I'd check your coolant level and any sign of white residue around the cap. a hot transmission can make the fan kick on - it's pulling air through that cooler as well. Do you have a way to read live data? That would eliminate this as a possible cause real quick - there's a PID for fan speed.
Most of us have heard a roaring fan, but it can also kinda sound like a grinding noise at medium fan speeds, which would occur at the mph/rpm range he's talking about.

When i speed up the noise goes away, would that be normal as well?
