you may
i believe that the 3.55 was an option. they didnt put much lower on a 150. 3.73s i believe for a regular 150, and 4.10 if you have the 7700 payload.
Does your truck have the 8 pin wireing plug or a class 3 trailer hitch reciever, those would also be some clues. Although both of those could have been added on later.
My 97 has the towing package which includes; oil cooler, trans cooler,HD cooling system, beefier suspension,HD shocks,Ford installed HD hitch,HD wiring harnass, and HD brakes. I was told this by Ford, that all this stuff is factory installed as the tow package.
It would be under the radiator in front of it a bit. Behind the front valence.
Just curious, but it sounds like your may or maynot have the tow package. But r u going to tow anything big???? With what you have told us i would think that the truck should be able to tow a good amount. if you do not plan on towing for a long distance i think you should be able to get away without a transmission cooler.
By the way you never said what engine you have. that could make a differencein what you can tow, but the tow package was offered with both V8sin that model.
I have the 5.4L. I only tow a couple of times a year. You're right, I should be fine, with or without it, but for some reason I believe a tranny cooler greatly lengthens transmission life.
If you only have the 4 pin plug, you do NOT have the factory tow package.
I have a 2001 SuperCab, purchased new, with the tow package. It has a 3.55 rear, and a trans cooler. There is also a power steering cooler on mine, which looks similar, but you can follow the lines to determine which you have.
According to my notes at the time, the "Trailer Towing Group" includes: 7-Wire Trailer Harness, Class III Hitch Receiver, H.D. Shock Absorbers, & H.D. Electrical/Cooling Group. The "Electrical/Cooling Group, H.D." (Required When Towing over 4000 lbs.) includes: H.D. 72-Amp Battery & Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooling.
Note that the H.D. Electrical/Cooling group is also available separately. Hope this helps!

DING DING DING!
I cannot agree more. If you do ANY TOWING AT ALL I would get a seperate cooler. Will it hurt you terrible not to have it, maybe not. But you would be surprised how much heat it will generate. My 7700 came with a 14 plate cooler but I want the 21 plate cooler that the tow package would have.
I'm not positive. I think if you had a regular payload truck it would be 14 plate. If you had a 7700 you got a 21 plate. But it could be the newer group B trucks only got the 21 plate, and they had a tow package standard. Go count it and find out what you have!
The 7700 should have a larger radiator and larger trans oil cooler in the radiator (vs. non 7700 F150). I would have thought all 7700 came with the tow package, at least Class III but maybe Class IV. By having a larger original trans cooler the aux could be smaller than 6000-6600 F150 aux cooler.
yeah, but alot of 7700's were shipped with the standard radiator. They definitely come standard with the aux 14 plate cooler, but not the tow package. My understanding of anything past a class iv is foggy. I've seen class III hitches with 10000lb ratings. I've never heard that they had a larger in rad tank trans cooler though.
Also, I think the reg f150 got the 14 plate only IF it came with the tow package. The 7700's got it standard, with the possible 21 plate towing upgrade.
