Morning all. I ordered the trick flow heads for my 400 about 8 months ago and they just got delivered. They won't be going on the engine immediately so I have time on my side. I have searched high and low for adjustable stud mounted roller rockers. I cannot find any with a 7/16" stud and the proper ratio that are specifically for Ford engines. Forgive my ignorance, but am I okay to use ones made for a different motor? I don't know if the geometry would be the same.
What have you guys had success with?
They are for the most part not engine or manufacturer specific. You just need 1.73-1 rockers 7/16 stud. Used on 351C,429,460, BBC, etc. I have used Harland Sharp, and Scorpions. most don't come with poly locs you will have to get them separately. Don't forget you have to use hardened pushrods with those guide plates so get the pushrod length figured out before you order them.
I have the pushrod length tool already. I have not seen adjustable rockers for this engine made by any of those manufacturers. In a stud mount at least.
If those heads did not come with studs and guide plates you need to buy some. There are only two different types of rocker mounts on these engines stock pedestal mount and aftermarket stud mount. I've never seen an aftermarket head with pedestal mounts. You have to figure out what studs you need. While you're at it buy this book and make it your bedside reader for a while. Appreciate it, yes, the heads come fully assembled. I have searched to the end of the internet trying to find roller rockers with adjustable preload capabilities for this engine. I know they are not required, and are more expensive. But I prefer them. I was only able to find adjustable rockers in a pedestal mount.
You do realize that you adjust the preload with the poly lock, right? If you want bolt down rockers with an adjustment on the pushrod cup Yella Terra, make those but get out your check book. I don't get the feeling you understand how valve train components go together.
I understand how the engine works to an extent. By no means am I an expert though. Or close to it. But I have built a few motors. Meaning exactly that, 4 engines, not a lot and I am always open to learning. I just finished a 4.6 jeep stroker 2 years ago. Originally I went with Harland Sharp RR's on it. To adjust the lifter preload with them, you must change the pushrod length. Hence the reason I have several different length comp cams pushrod length tools now. I ended up switching them out for adjustable roller rockers, mainly because the HS roller rockers sounded like a really noisy sewing machine.
I found the YT roller rockers and you aren't kidding. $1200+!!.
But those were pedestal mount, not stud mount.
The 400 uses rockers with a 1.73:1 ratio… this is the same as 351c/351m/460. Some people will use BBC rockers but those are 1.70:1 and may lead to geometry issues. Lots of folks makes these and some are better than others. I’ve used high end ones and cheep ones and have never had an issue with either but I don’t race anything I own.
That is exactly the information I was after. Thank you. I dont plan on racing this motor. What my 17yr old does when I'm not around may be another story though.
We believe you're referring to the Trickflow Powerport 195cc or 225cc heads for the Cleveland or Modified engines. If so those do come with 7/16" rocker studs and guideplates. These would accept 7/16 roller rockers with a 1.73 ratio. Here are the options we have with those specs that would fit your heads. These all use a polylock to adjust lifter preload. You're on the right track with a pushrod length checker to find the correct pushrod length for your combo. Another thing to consider is with full roller rockers you're going to need tall valve covers.
Let us know if we can be of any further assistance. We'll be happy to help!
Listen to Summit!!
There is no real difference in adjusting the preload with the poly loc and adjusting it with the pushrod cup. Done right, the results will be exactly the same.
I have tried several roller rocker setups on my boss 302
Back to running stock non pedestal rockers with factory fulcrums
They do not move around as much on my valve tips and hold their adjustment with my solid lifters longer / better
Running lash caps too for a larger contact surface (I've cracked a few with a Gigantor 909 cam back in the days)
I think you should be able to find some 1.73's
I googled Boss 351 roller rockers and see where PRW makes some steel ones
They might not wear out as fast as the old aluminum Crane or Comp Cams (unobtainable for the most part)
Last resort
Even back in the 70's people would just use the BBC ones that are 1.70
The Yella Terra rockers are a very high quality option for a rocker arm that will pedestal mount using a 7/16 bolt and give you an adjustment screw at the pushrod end.
These are VERY high quality rocker arms. I used them on my monster truck engines for about 20 years and we had zero failures. They are easy to set up on the head and then I would just torque then bolts to 50lbs.
