Well, I just bought new tires for my 4x2, and they are street tires, racing tires. So no more off roading in this one, gotta get the 91 up to speed so I can go mud with that one.
Originally posted by ursine A 4x2 is the best for offroading, they have much better handling and can go alot faster. I would take a 4x2 anyday, if you get a good rear end, preferrably an Eaton E-Locker you can go just about anywhere a 4x4 can go but you can get there faster and safer.
lol well come on down to my land and we can go play in some mud or play in the water......hey i know we can hit up the rock garden I got out back! think that 4x2 would make it? (and still run afterwards?)
if they are some awesome why do ppl in the off-road world seem to enjoy 4-wheel drive rather than 2-wheel drive?
i don't cut my 4x4 in until my rear tires stop grabbing...then it's 4x4 and hammer down
hey pro- did we really just read this?

edit: i'm guessing some of you would say these are all 2-wheel drives?

those are a couple of clean trucks...but what can they really do? go fast? ok! would you really consider that "off-roading"? i mean i guess i do but it is on the less extreme side, i dunno...does anyone see where i'm going with this?
I have seen a 4x4 outrun 4x2's many many times. just b/c they have an extra axle doesn't mean they are any slower!
ursine is just talking smack over there....somehow i doubt a 4x2 will go anywhere a 4x4 can go!

Yea, Jason, I'm afraid we friggin did. Add to the mix, that most 2x4s have an open diff out back, what you have is a mighty one wheel drive off roading machine. I'll just chalk it up to semantics: Some people figure off-roading is a gravel road with potholes, others thinks its four feet of mud and a 45 degree class V boulder strewn firebreak trail. Besides which, none of those trucks could get there as fast as mine. More safely? Probably, but not as fast.
I think everybody knows by now where I stand

Yeah these guys most think muddin is on a wet gravel road, cuz here in NE I can't even get out of my yard without using 4wd when it rains or snows a bunch. My truck blows in 2wd, but once in 4wd it beats other 4wd drive trucks in 4wd. Now lockers in a 2 wheel drive will get ya going but, wait till you have to steer in mud or snow, you'll wish you had 4wd then, somethings gotta pull that front end over.
I was just making a point. Gordon has won the Baja 1000 several times which is a desert race. One can fry eggs on rocks in the Mojave. I grew up 5 minutes from Monteagle and 55 from Tellico and know what wheelin in the mtns is about. But you guys keep talkin about off-roadin and you can't decide if your muddin or rock crawlin. And 4wheelin in your driveway. The only point I'm making is there's all kinds of wheelin and racin and there all a blast. I sort of like Gordon because he races Nascar, Baja, Indy and a few other things. The reason the second car is clean is its for the upcoming season and the other one finished third in the 2002 Baja 1000. So if yall boys think you can take Gordon in the Baja 1000 you probably got a Mustang in the garage that can out run Dick Trickle.
I still say thats a bad bad F150. Those things are built to go airborn.
Well, sure, but baja racing is just that; baja racing. Offroading typically is referring to either mud bogging, rock climbing, mud dragging, etc. Comparing any of those to driving really fast in the desert is totally an apples to oranges arguement. No arguement that the baja rigs are bad *** though.
If you'll notice, both my Fords are 4X4. But never ever make a mistake and underestimate the desert or some of the rugged mountains in the Southwest. The temperature extremes are ridiculus at times. The irony is that I see a lot of Excursions, Expeditions and trucks lifted etc. that are more suited to the mud than rock climbing or sand dunes. BTW, there is rock climbing in the Southwest. I like it all!

really? lol hell i do....that's the only way I learn is the hard way!
I never said there wasn't rock crawling in the SW...hell a few of the toughest trails are down there!
OK, a few things, and yes I do own and love 4x4s also 4x2s however. If you look in ANY truck magazine for offroad, they classify Mud, Sand, and Rock as off road, and Snow.......Now over Rocks a 4x2 CANNOT hang. but when you get into a built 4x2, it can hang EASILY with a 4x4 on sand and mud. Most wheelers I know (mud I am talking about) do not even throw it in 4x4 until they hit that big hole and get stuck. 4x2 has less chance of getting stuck in the first place, more momentum, better speed and acceleration than a 4x4 in 2wd mode, and a lighter front end to keep it from getting buried in the mud. You people neeed to et off your High Horses. As I have stated I have taken my 4x2 in mud that 4x4s have gotten stuck, right after another, now these are all stock, including mine. and for a stock truck, going through 1 1/2 feet of mud in Arkansas ain;t bad, even for a 4x4 as they EVEN have opens front AND back from factory.
