Good question - Well, for starters, I'm an idiot twice, and it was 1/2" drive - basic brain fart. NTL, I did tend to use more than needed because it did feel and operate well. Kinda to your point, it also had a very specific job: With the big block stuffed into the truck, the #8 spark plug is right adjacent to the steering column. It takes the perfect length combination of socket, extension and wrench to get in there and turn it. In fact, I need to place the socket on first, and then sneak the wrench/extension combo onto the socket. Then I just get a half turn and need to remove the wrench. Then spin it out by hand. Installation in the reverse order. As it turns out, that ratchet, plus a short 1/2-3/8 adapter, plus the socket, was the perfect length combination. The bit of heft and rigidity also help get it broken loose because I'm standing on the bumper leaned way into the thing during the whole process.
