I have 2 ford 400s. Have one completely apart rebuilding it.
The other is getting a new double roller timing chain.
The one that is completely apart was standard bore and the OEM timing chain was in it. The plastic type. There was an oil slinger on this motor, and I still have it waiting to be put back in.
The one getting a new double roller timing chain had the OEM plastic timing gear and it was in really bad shape. This motor has no oil slinger and my 1979 Ford Factory Engine manual does not show an oil slinger to be removed or installed in the timing chain section.
You are correct the 79 manuals don't mention the slinger, but all the older ones do. I would put it on it isn't thick enough to change anything and they used them on every other engine.
easiest way to check is put it in there and bolt on timing cover with no gasket then eyeball and see if you have space. I believe it should clear though
