Broken Coil over bolts
Have'nt seen this problem mentioned, I went to replace my spark plugs on 2012 SuperDuty XLT, 1 st coil over bolt came out OK, 2nd Coilover hold down bolt snapped about 1/2 inch down from the head, coil refused to come off the leftover stud, after forcing it, coil broke at the boss that the bolt goes through. metal sleeve inside this boss was rusted to the bolt, had to Kroil it and work it off the let over bolt stud. the number 3 coilover did the same thing. question is how to get the stud out of the plastic intake manifolt? The metal insert doe not seem to be stout enough to wrench really hard on it. tried PB Blaster and Kroil, nothing. Don't really want to replace the intake manifold.
Any mechanics out there run into this problem? Ideas?
Now to remove the studs. You will need a good pair of vice grips. Ones with teeth and crosshatched. Do not use a cheap pair. It will take some work, some words, and a few other things. Slowly work the stud back and forth. It does protrude through the bottom so it will go both ways. You may only get a 1/16 of a turn or less. Once it breaks loose, don't over do it. Move it out, then back. There is rust on the bottom too that needs to break loose. Constantly spray PB and go SLOW. It took me two hours to get the front one out and three hours for the rear because of the location under the cowl.
Hear is another thought that will save you some bucks. Motorcraft COPS are also made by NKG in West Virginia. Instead of paying $130.00 from Ford, use the NKG. They are a lot cheaper and they spec a little hotter.
Good luck.
